Started off my morning by watching some dead ISIS bros show off impressive canned provisions in their dugout in Makhoul mountains. What a world I live in.

Al Qaeda Is Starting to Swallow the Syrian Opposition

mkondich

whats incredible is that he doesn't speak a lick of arabic and relies on other people to translate things for him

from point A to point B the opposition is completely fucked as was expected a few years back. they were told repeatedly don't align with jihadists and when they did they received motivation from obama in the form of ammo, weapons, tows, etc.
victories in idlib were essentially handed to them despite disobeying direct orders. this is not how you prevent radicalization, this is how you encourage it. the idea that US and partners hate assad so much that they'd look the other way with these jihadist groups was always going to fall flat on its face - lister was/has been a champion of working with Opp and that's unlikely to change

every victory for the syrian army against IS is the clock counting down on the opposition. dominant powers have pretty much accepted that SAA will dominate the rest of the war. its all a matter of time with CIA aid cut off for both idlib and daraa. MOM and MOC have reined the leash in

it will always be comedic when analysts affiliated with ISW or brookings still push for a daraa no fly zone. "death over humiliation" was a somber reminder to these think tanks that MOC doesn't have control of southern front anymore. expect a huge breakout in daraa violence (Beyond the current jaish al khalid fighting near nawa now) in the next 6 months as a last breath before they lose the war there

nusra is and always has been a survivalist entity. regardless of how quickly or slowly idlib is taken they'll in all likelihood retain a civiilian presence near jisr just as they had before the conflict with muslim brotherhood cells becoming increasingly radical

"The Free Syrian Army, meanwhile, has come to represent a loose umbrella under which armed groups that identify with the original ideals of Syria’s nationalist revolution have gathered."

I wonder how many of these groups actually exist independently from the Al Qaeda affiliates. Maybe a couple thousand, tops...
