Le Pen in sight of a regional triumph

As French far-right leader begins regional election campaign, many fear his party could gain control of a large part of the country

There are many grounds for mistrusting Jean-Marie Le Pen, but electoral prediction is not generally among them. When he hazards a guess the veteran leader of France's far right is rarely wrong. And this, he said yesterday, is the most winnable election of all his long career. Even his opponents agree that next spring's regional polls, the first since the presidential and parliamentary elections last year which produced the biggest upset in the country's postwar political history, will probably give the pugnacious National Front president his greatest chance yet of a historic victory.

"I see things very clearly," he said yesterday, formally beginning his campaign for the presidency of the Provence, Alpes and Côte d'Azur (Paca) region before a battery of TV cameras in a chartered yacht replete with champagne and canapes in the Baie des Anges, off Nice.

"There will be three major contenders in the second round," he said. "Neither the right nor the left will withdraw - as they did to wreck our chances last year - and they certainly won't merge their lists.

"I am confident that here, finally, we will emerge as the winners of a three-way battle."

Many observers think Mr Le Pen may be right. The anti-immigrant Front has come close to controlling France's 20 regional councils before, notably at the last polls in 1998, when several conservative council presidents tried to make ultimately unsuccessful deals with far-right leaders in an effort to retain their seats.

This time its chances of winning an outright victory, particularly in its heartlands in eastern and southern France, may be even better.

The Socialist party is still reeling from the events of last year, when their presidential candidate, Lionel Jospin, was knocked out by Mr Le Pen, and their government humiliated by a landslide conservative victory in parliamentary polls.

The early flush of Jean-Pierre Raffarin's centre-right government has faded, and its approval rating is falling steadily on issues such as its allegedly inept handling of this summer's heatwave and its unpopular reforms of state pensions, the civil service and the national health system.

A senior Front official, Carl Lang, estimated yesterday that the party should reach the second round of the two-stage elections in "probably 16 or 17 regions". In 1998 it won an average of 15.25% of the vote and returned 275 regional councillors; even its opponents expect it to do a great deal better this time.

It could also be helped by a change in the voting laws introduced by the government earlier this year.

Aimed primarily at spoiling the chances of minority parties, many of the bill's measures were ruled unconstitutional, and what remains of the legislation, giving the second-round winner a bonus of 25% of all council seats, "could now really work to our advantage", said Marine Le Pen, the Front's vice-president and her father's likely successor.

Nowhere is the risk of the Front gaining its first taste of serious power higher than in Paca, where Mr Le Pen won a record 28% of the vote in the second round of last year's presidential election. Unemployment there, at 11.5%, is more than two points higher than the national average, encouraging support for the far-right.

Thierry Mariani, a conservative MP who has successfully fought off Front challenges in his southern constituency Vaucluse, said the prospects of Mr Le Pen becoming regional president - with control over a large budget for economic development, education, transport and culture - were "terrifyingly real".

"Here the Front can count on as many votes as both the right and the left," he said. "It would of course be a catastrophe: every regional decision would be politicised."

Mr Mariani knows what he is talking about. In the four southern French town halls it has controlled, Orange, Vitrolles, Marignane and Toulon, the Front has not hesitated to implement its policies of national preference for French citizens in jobs, housing and social benefits, and to promote "traditional" French culture.

Subsidies have been withdrawn from rap and ethnic musicians and from festivals which showed gay movies; cultural centres which held "non-French" events have been closed; schools stopped from offering special meals to Jewish and Muslim children; municipal libraries banned from subscribing to leftwing publications.

In Vitrolles the Front town council briefly offered an illegal £500 "baby subsidy" to couples who added to their family - providing that both parents were of white European origin.

Michel Vauzelle, the current Socialist president of the regional council, is equally pessimistic.

"There's a very big risk," he said. "Neither the left nor the right can win by saying, 'If the worst comes to the worst, we'll merge to keep out the Front.' That would hand them victory on a plate."

Blinking in the sun on the deck of the Star Côte d'Azur yesterday, Mr Le Pen brimmed with an unaccustomed confidence. "True, the president of a region does not have the same powers as the president of the republic," he said. "But victory here will send a very, very strong signal.

"After the earthquake of the presidential elections, it will mark the beginning of fundamental change for France."

I grew up in France, and I have deep respect, admiration, and affection for the Front National and J-M Le Pen. However, I remember the FN of yesteryear when they openly called for the deportation of immigrants, you no longer hear such talk. I don't even know what they plan to do (when/if in power) with Arabs, Africans, and other worthless non-Aryans presently polluting the French soil. This Third World riff raff must leave France and other western European countries, presto!-- Europe is for Aryans only. I want Europe to be as White as it was at the end of the 19th Century; no, I want it to be even Whiter!!! I want to see a United Europe based on race. Either the racial invaders will leave quitely, taking with them filthy mongrels and Jews (and I favour suitable financial compensation for the non-Aryans who will be asked to leave), or they will be deported at gun point. I personally know Frenchmen would are arming themselves for a potential armed struggle...when the time comes.

France (together with Netherlands) is probably European country that is in worse shape - far worse than Germany. Currently there are hundreds no-go zones where not even the police is allowed access - practically small islamic republics where one cannot order a ham sandwich and a white woman cannot walk around if not dressed as required by islamic code. My estimate is that around 10 million (out of the population of 60 million) is non white - half of these are already french citizens. And their numbers are growing exponentially. An interesting fenomenon is that the third generation arabs who were born in France are becoming far more radicalized than their foreign born fathers. It is also (what a surprise) the country with the highest jewish population in Europe (close to 1 million) and they are heavily involved in this disaster. Today their attitude is schizophrenic. On one side, they whine about 'antisemitic' attacks on synagogues performed by the same Arabs they so eagerly imported, on the other you can find them heading various pro-immigration, pro-multikulti organizations such as 'SOS-racisme' etc. They also were pushing for the France to be the main sponsor of Israel before the 1967 war, after which the US took over this role (Israel developed its nukes mostly with French technology, and won the 1967 war with french Mirage jets and british Centurion tanks). The situation in France confirms my theory that when the percentage of Jews reaches 1% of the population, the country starts rapidly going down the sewers - 1% is the lethal dose. Germany, in my opinion, is in better shape because most of the immigrants are of Eastern european origin, not Arabs or Africans. They will integrate, and a good number of them might even became fiercely German ([Walter] Novotny or [Otto] Skorzeny are not exactly the most German names, for example). There is still some hope for Deutschland, as long as they find a way to stop importing Russian Jews under the program that traitor Helmut Kohl established. As for France, I am much less optimistic. Even though FN has toned down its rethoric and watered down its program and a too many Jews are milling around (these guys sure cover all the bases), my best hopes still rest on the old paratrooper and his followers.

I watch French News 2 every night on cable. Covering his campaign kick-off, they did give Le Pen a fair shake, although I did sense urgency in his opponents' statements that if NF starts winning over the people, France will go down the drain!!

Can you even fathom the absurdity of statements comme ca?!?!?

As someone who has travelled to France many times, I've seen the slow decay become more rapid over the last several years. When I think of beautiful France, I think of Western Civilization. She is unpredictable. If the White resurgence to self-determination is going to spark and burn it will be in France. Germany, while not as devoured by non-White filth, is too fractured from it's past as the last Aryan hope to seriously attempt a new Nationalism. This time, it's going to be France. J'espere qu'elle nous emmenerait la et au dela!!

World Jewry has condemned the West and the White man to Hell on Earth. We need new heroes now.

VIVE LE PEN! VIVE LE FRONT NATIONAL! VIVE L'OCCIDENT!

The inevitable race war is only a few years away, in my estimation. I look forward to it with great anticipation. I can smell it, it's preordained.

Once the war starts it will be Aryans on one side and the non-Aryans on the other. Basically, all non-Aryans in Europe are aliens and our racial enemies. Once the war starts people won't be splitting hairs; either you're an Aryan, and a member our in-group, or a racial invader to be driven back.

I mostly care about Germany, though.

I want a 100 % pure and Aryan German nation, where real Germans are masters of their own house (destiny).

Dear Friedrich,

I am Germanocentric too - I am 100% NS.

But, let's hope and pray for France too - our civilization without France would be like a man without a leg.

I am afraid that no white country will be able to come out of this horrible mess alone - it will have to be a concerted and coordinated effort, an effort that, if successful will create the beginning of a real Europa. I also think that our friends on this board who believe that we will be able to vote our way out of this are naive beyond imagination. If we want the living space, if we don't want the future generations to curse us, we will have to be prepared to fight and die for it.

Dear Rudel,

Thank you for your post; of course, your right. It will undoubetdly take a concerted effort to rid Europe of the invading riff raff and Jews -- the eternal cause of our misfortunes.
