Recently the World Economics Journal published the text of a debate on the vexed topic of immigration to Britain. Nigel Harris, Professor Emeritus of Economics at University College, London took the ‘pro’ position, while David Coleman, Reader in Demography at Oxford took the ‘anti’. Although the theme iwa immigration to the UK, I think much of the argument is applicable to all Western societies with an immigration issue, including the US.

At the risk of over-simplifying what is an interesting debate between two academic heavyweights, the outcome seems to have been a tie on the economic benefits, while Coleman wipes the floor with Harris for his lack of concern about the cultural and political fallout.

David Coleman by the way is one of the leading lights behind the MigrationwatchUK organization that is becoming a real thorn in the side of the UK government on its immigration policies.
