I've used AVG and it's good. For a lot of great free software, look at http://www.onlythebestfreeware.com/

This website suggests Antivir Personal Edition. They both get the job done, but Antivir doesn't require asking for a license number.

But, Linux is the way to go.

I loaded it and it seems okay. I wonder, why do they supply it for free? What is their angle?

Thanks for your reply. :)

There's no home market for software unless you're the king of a given software segment. In other words, they can't make money selling it to you so they have no reason to charge you for it.

AVG makes software for businesses. And, if you have a free copy and you like it, they hope you'll get your boss to buy the non-free business licence. As a general rule, people don't buy software (or music) that they haven't already experienced for free.

Some software companies, such as the Linux companies, provide their software for free even to businesses. But, they count on making money by providing software support, customized versions, and other services. And, even for free software, people are sometimes willing to put down significant money for a nicely packaged version.

If they didn't give it out free, they couldn't make any money.

I have used AVG for years and it has saved my computer many times.

Ad-Aware is also another excellent free program that will help get rid of spy-ware, a necessity when almost every site on the web has pop-ups.
