People 'worry more about immigration than crime' By Philip Johnston, Home Affairs Editor (Filed: 19/08/2003)

Immigration is of greater concern to voters than crime, a survey has found.

It showed that a large majority believes that the Government's immigration and asylum policies are too lax.

Eight out of 10 people questioned said they were "not tough enough" while only eight per cent considered the balance of measures to be "about right".

The YouGov poll, for The Sun, confirmed the deepening concern about immigration among the electorate identified earlier this month by Stephen Byers, the former Cabinet minister.

Asked to list the most important political issues facing Britain, 39 per cent identified immigration and asylum, while 32 per cent cited law and order, nine per cent terrorism and six per cent focused on the euro.

Some 80 per cent of those questioned agreed with the statement that "the problem of asylum seekers is out of control".

Asked whether all immigrants should be tested for infectious diseases as part of the immigration process, 86 per cent agreed, with only seven per cent against.

More than half the sample of 2,309 voters considered that immigration had changed the country for the worse by altering its character, while about a third believed that Britain had improved by becoming a more varied and tolerant society.

Sir Andrew Green, the chairman of Migration Watch UK, an independent think tank that monitors the issue, said people were beginning to appreciate the scale of immigration to Britain after being assured for many years that tough controls were in place.

"This government has permitted and is now encouraging immigration on a massive scale - by far the highest in our history," he said.

"This is totally against the wishes of the public and must be reversed."

Estimates by Migration Watch last year that primary immigration to Britain was running at two million a decade were dismissed by the Government but have since largely been substantiated by official figures.

Migration Watch bases its prediction of 240,000 net non-EU immigration every year by adding illegal arrivals and overstayers to legal immigrants and asylum seekers.

About the same ratio seen in polls in the United States...No suprise here.

**"This government has permitted and is now encouraging immigration on a massive scale - by far the highest in our history," he said.

Scrapping their immigration agenda is as likely as the mass amnesty posing as a "guest worker program" authored by the 3 treasonus Arizona buffoons will be scrapped due to the "will of the people".

Nope... until the people can cough up more cash than the special interest groups, the "will of the people" is moot and the people can pound sand.

Do you fear for your country yet????

Leveller,

I recall Churchill making some comment to the effect that the Americans and British were two common people separated only by language. I'd add this to it. We have the same type of stupid, greedy, treasonous "leaders" over here as you have over there. I worry as well.

Sert, I agree, we're all in the same boat, more or less. That's why I like this forum. :D

You'd think by now they'd have figured out they're tied together.
