Thanks for the link Lewis. "The Passion" is destined to be an unequalled classic in the entire realm of cinematic history. In the present degradation and apostasy that currently surrounds us, this film should be required viewing in schools, churches and public places.(i know...in my dreams!) In our current world order where most people rely on visuals, because of microscopic attention spans, this movie just might persuade folks to pick up a Bible. Thank you Mel Gibson!

It's in Aramaic, the language of The New Testament.
Still spoken in parts of Syria. The Orthodox Litergy and hymns are in Aramaic. There is a Syrian Orthodix Church in NYC that still does it.

In Gibson's movie, the Roman soldiers speak Latin (instead of Greek). See the link that I've provided in my previous post.
"There was a Greek speaking element in all strata of Roman society. Educated Romans sent their sons to Greece or got Greek teachers. But you had a whole class of slaves, merchants and craftsmen from the East that also spoke Greek.
Additionally, 'Roman' was a political, NOT a linguistic label, certainly in Jesus' time. Unless the troops stationed in Palestine at that time were of Roman stock, they would probably be Greek speaking. In any case, there is no doubt that they would need to be Greek speaking to communicate to the natives.
By the way, St. Paul's epistle to Romans was written in Greek. Why would St. Paul write in Greek to the people in Rome, unless there were Greek speakers among them? More importantly, why was the Roman church Greek speaking in the first few centuries of its life?
This has nothing to do with thinking everything is centered on the Greeks. This is about historical realism. Unless there are many scenes of inter-Roman communication in the movie, there is absolutely no reason for Latin to be used at all.

Mel Gibson's film ââ¬ÅThe Passion,ââ¬Â which is about the last 12 hours of Christ's life, is the object of campaign vilification and book-burning by a committee of Christians and Jews who want to shut it down before it is shown, or edit it to their own politically (or religiously) correct standards. Paula Fredriksen is a spokeswoman for this committee. The New Republic has shamed itself by printing her ill-informed and bigoted attack on the film.
Unlike Fredriksen and others who want to destroy the film before they have seen it, I have seen ââ¬ÅThe Passion.ââ¬Â It is not an attempt to portray the historical Jesus ââ¬â which is the subject of Fredriksen's entire screed ââ¬â nor could it be. By Fredriksen's own account there is no evidentiary basis for such a portrait, and if anyone tried to create one it would be eviscerated by the same Savanarolas, precisely because no one can know what the truth is.
Gibson's film is an artistic vision and must be judged that way. Like others who have seen the film, I am sworn to keep details confidential so that it gets its chance when the distributors present it to the viewing public next Easter. However, I will say this: It is an awesome artifact, an overpowering work. I can't remember being so affected by a film before.
It is extremely painful to watch and yet the violence is never gratuitous. You never feel as if you want to take your eyes off the screen. It is a wracking emotional journey that never strays from its inspirational purpose. It is as close to a religious experience as art can get.
It is not anti-Semitic, as the film-burners have charged. Two illustrative details: Jesus is referred to in the film as "rabbi," and there is never any distancing of Jesus or his disciples from their Jewishness. (One point missed by ignorant bigots like Fredriksen, whose only familiarity with ââ¬ÅThe Passionââ¬Â is with a stolen script, is that while the film is in Aramaic ââ¬â a brilliant effect that enhances the symbolic resonance of the story ââ¬â it has subtitles.) Second detail: A Jew carries Jesus' cross along the terrible route to Golgotha and shares his miseries.
But yes, the film is also faithful to the Gospels, and therefore the Pharisees are Jesus' enemies and they and their flock do call for Jesus' death (and why wouldn't they, since Jesus was a threat to their authority and their beliefs?).
But all this is to miss the point. This is a Christian parable. The cruelty, intolerance and lack of compassion of human beings is limitless ââ¬â and we who have lived through the 20th century know this all too well. The moral of this Christian story ââ¬â of Mel Gibson's film ââ¬â is that we all killed Jesus ââ¬â Jew and Gentile alike ââ¬â and tortured him, and we do so every day.
But if you believe the vision that Gibson has rendered so searingly and so well, Jesus forgives us for that very act. Whosoever will give up cruelty and love his brother will enter paradise. That is the message that Gibson has framed in his extraordinary work. The effort to shut down his film before it opens is just another station of the cross.

Here's another commentary on Gibson's movie. Say what you will about Linder, but he's a pugnacious writer and a brilliant polemicist. A street fighter.

Notice the way jew publications 1) draw the Catholics in as cover, just as they use the Nordik-named Frederiksen she-goy-bitch for cover, and 2) ALWAYS list the "Catholics" first, as though the poower, innocent hookies are just tagging along, like a baby brother with a blanket and thumb in itz mouth, rather than blazing the path of hate they're sempiternally and hypocritical whining about others trodding. Well, let me tell you, friend, HATE BEGINS WITH Jew. Is Mel Gibson a hater? Manifestly not. Is Mel Gibson hated by the REAL HATERS? Manifestly so. And note this, the forces of jewish hate illegally obtained a copy of the script. Where is the prosecution? Who died and gave these Jew babyfuckers the right to prevent others from exercising their rights while they themselves exercise every extralegal option in the book? New York, NY, August 11, 2003 ââ¬Â¦ After having attended a private screening of Mel Gibson's new film, "The Passion," the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today voiced concerns that the film, if released in its present form, "will fuel hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism" by reinforcing the notion of collective Jewish guilt for the death of Jesus. An ADL representative was present at a private screening of "The Passion" at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.
"The film unambiguously portrays Jewish authorities and the Jewish mob as the ones responsible for the decision to crucify Jesus," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We are deeply concerned that the film, if released in its present form, will fuel the hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism that many responsible churches have worked hard to repudiate."
