I'm in a slight quandary where to place this post, since it touches on a variety of forum subject areas, however Current Events seems on balance the best fit.
In what is really a first mainstream endorsement, Sir David Attenborough of telly fame has come out in support of the Optimum Population Trust, a UK think tank that promotes the stabilization and steady reduction of the human population on a global and national level.
Attenborough is quoted in today's Sunday Times:

ââ¬ÅThe human population can no longer be allowed to grow in the same old uncontrolled way. If we do not take charge of our population size, then nature will do it for us and it is the poor people of the world who will suffer most.ââ¬Â
The OPT has developed an interesting methodology for determining the long-term sustainable carrying capacity of a country or region. This indicates that the optimum population for the UK is 30 million (currently 59), and for the US it is 241 million (now 290). A few countries, such as Canada, Australia and NZ are below their optimum capacity, according to the OPT.
