An interesting concept. If more states seceded, they could actually have different policies/laws on a Federal level, and thus competition for the best system could actually exist.

The Republic of Texas unfortunately made the news by its rather ephemerel direction, and questionable tactics related to bogus liens, finally ending in that little incident at Fort Stockton.

In any event states issues can't be seperated from the larger issues, as the R.O.T. affair certainly proves now. In 1836 Mexicans knew that Texas seccession would be shortly followed by reamalgamation into the U.S. Now they know probably the reverse is true, as Texas is drifting back toward Mexico.
