Letters to the editor: Lynch's medals Bee Editorial Staff Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Tuesday, July 29, 2003

Re "Jessica Lynch flies home today to W. Virginia with 3 new medals," July 22: My father got a Bronze Star during World War II. He flew 28 bombing missions with the 5th Air Force over hostile territory, got shot down and eluded the Japanese for 30 days with the help of the Chinese before he was rescued.

Pvt. Jessica Lynch got her Bronze Star for making a wrong turn and getting captured. Her medal is a slap in the face for anyone who has received a Bronze Star. Why not just give her the Medal of Honor?

I am not surprised at the hype Lynch has received. The pressure put on the military from the feminists inside and outside the military must be great. Not only that, but the Bush regime must search for something somewhat redeemable from this strung-out police action in Iraq.

I think it's a shame to award the Bronze Star to someone who didn't earn it. The circumstances by which Lynch was wounded and captured and then rescued are just a bit dubious at best. But what the heck, it makes for a good documentary, and maybe even a movie.

The Bronze Star is a medal usually awarded to soldiers who go above and beyond the call of duty in combat. Lynch didn't exhibit this, though she does deserve the Purple Heart she received.

I am in agreement with all veterans who see this affair as more of an embarrassment than an example of pure honor, duty and sacrifice.

I find it interesting that nowadays you get a medal for pretty much firing your rifle in battle. This is ridiculas, now getting a medal is almost meaningless because everybody gets one for doing basically their job.

Whats interesting is that all that BS the Pentagon originally told about Lynch fighting off several Iraqi columns was actually done by a man in her unit by the name of Donald Walters. Yet Lynch gets the credit. Pathetic!

Anybody who really considers Lynch a hero obviously has a low standard for heroism. She doesn't deserve any credit at all. Can you believe there's actually a fan website for her http://www.jessica-lynch.com/ with all sorts of forums to discuss the latest news about poor old Jessica. Pathetic!!

An email correspondent coined a new term especially for Ms. Lynch - "Heropuff".
