**India sees big HIV/Aids rise
The number of people in India infected with the HIV/Aids virus has risen sharply, according to figures released on Friday.
More than 4.5 million Indians were infected by the end of 2002, India's National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) says.
The figure for 2001 was below four million.
The figures were released in the Indian capital, Delhi, on the eve of a major conference on HIV/Aids.
More than a thousand political leaders from across India, including the prime minister, senior federal and state officials, legislators, mayors and local leaders will attend.
It is the biggest forum on Aids ever held in India and is also being attended by UN officials and non-government organizations.
Spreading
NACO says that in a number of states in the country, HIV infection among pregnant women has crossed the 1% mark for the first time.
"HIV/Aids in India is not only confined to high-risk groups and in cities, but is gradually spreading into rural areas and the general population," said NACO director, Meenakshi Datta Ghosh. The UN's top Aids officials, Peter Piot, said the challenge was to rapidly scale up Aids prevention programmes nationwide, and ensure that Aids treatment is widely accessible to people living with HIV/Aids.
"India has a king-sized problem. Aids is spreading rapidly in the country," he told journalists in Delhi.
"But it is a problem with a solution. We can act now before it is too late."
Ignorance
India has the second highest rate of HIV infection afte r South Africa
The UN believes public ignorance is fuelling the spread of Aids.
So far the government has been slow to tackle the problem, partly due to pressure from conservatives who oppose any prevention that could be interpreted as promoting promiscuity.
But correspondent say attitudes are changing as the epidemic spreads.
Heterosexual transmission and intravenous drug injections are the main modes of transmission of HIV. **

What I found was particularly enlightening was the statement by Meenakshi Datta Ghosh to the effect that in India, HIV/AIDS is not only confined to high-risk groups and the inner cities, which seems to indicate that Hindu women - and men - are quite indiscriminately promiscuous, which of course helps to spread this incredibly useful disease.
AIDS is a cleansing agent. 25 years from now we will not have to tolerate so many parasites infesting the world: they will conveniently extirpate themselves.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that India is a very puritan place where virginity before marriage is still expected and arranged marriages the norm. But on the other hand there are about 25 million prostitutes working in that country. Going to a prostitute after work there is considered normal as the pub visit over here.
I guess I have to disappoint you, but AIDS is not an eugenetic killer. It is primarily the young, urban, socially upward mobile one that catches that desease. This is why AIDS is so devastating economically. It destroys the economically active population.

No, they are all spread by those evil Muslim men, taking advantage of poor innocent Hindu girls (and also probably evil Muslim whores seducing virtuous Hindu men).

Even in Africa the Whorehouse is very often the way Aids is spread. Some have said it was the Truck Drivers who spread Aids across India. One story I saw said most of them Aids and they always stop at every Whorehouse. Even when the Women are Chaste they can still get it from thier whoring husbands and pass it to thier children in birth or nursing.

Eugenetic?
I am not disappointed. If a disease is to be effective the people that primarily fall victim to it, must be young, urban, socially upward/mobile. Such diseases destroy the upcoming "core" of a civillization, collapsing it from within before it has time to regenerate.
Okiereddust: visiting a brothel is nothing to brag about. It is about as complicated a transaction as buying a toaster. Anyone who'd brag about visting a brothel would probably be as likely to brag about the fact that he managed to put his shoes on the right feet for a change.
For rban, of course, that would be a remarkable accomplishment.

**Prostitution in the Indian capital, Delhi, is changing with young girls from middle-class families becoming involved in the business.
Unlike in the past, when girls from poor families were forced to take to prostitution, more and more models and even school girls have joined the profession, the authorities say.**
The police say prostitution has become a huge organised business in the capital.
"These girls are all from rich and good families and they took up this profession to earn some quick money," says deputy commissioner of police, Sanjay Beniwal, reflecting on one recent operation against Delhi prostitutes.
He says some of the arrested girls were charging nearly $400 a time for deals fixed over the phone.
The deals are fixed by pimps who arrange for the girls to meet their clients.
"Businessmen and other rich individuals no longer throng the dingy brothels in Delhi since they now have a host of upmarket call girls to choose from," the officer said.
The police sometimes, find it difficult to handle these cases because of the alleged involvement of politicians and bureaucrats.
"I do entertain big business delegations which come to Delhi and other high-profile people because they can pay good money," says a Delhi prostitute who gave her name as Sheila.
She told the BBC she buys expensive jewellery and clothes with the money she earns from this trade.
Quick money
Sheila comes from a wealthy family in the city of Chandigarh and came to Delhi a few years ago for her college studies.
She has now finished her studies and is working in a bank in the capital.
Non-governmental organisations say girls from rich families are entering the trade simply for quick money and also for pleasure.
The president of the Delhi-based Joint Women's Programme - Jyotsna Chatterjee - says there are many girls from Bombay and Bangalore who come to Delhi on Friday nights to spend the weekend with their rich clients.
"These girls are sought after for international business meetings and even some tour operators offer girls as part of holiday packages," she told the BBC.
The police say fitness centres, hotels and farmhouses have become hubs for this trade.
Massage parlours which also provide escort services and dating clubs have also increased in the capital.
The police say they have already started to clamp down on these parlours.
