EAGLE, Colo. - Saturday editions of the Vail Daily newspaper ran his mug shot, a 1-by-1-inch grainy souvenir of a small town's notorious brush with NBA stardom.
In the photo released Friday, Los Angeles Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant stares without expression into an Eagle County Sheriff's Department camera during his July 4 booking on suspicion of felony sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman.
The world might have come to know this man as "Kobe," the overtly charming, megawatt-smiling, product-endorsing, NBA championship-winning basketball hero.
But in this resort-area town 127 miles west of Denver, Bryant, 24, of Newport Coast, Calif., is the celebrity suspect whose impending legal fate has triggered a debate divisive along racial and gender lines.
While authorities continue their investigation of the purported June 30 attack at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera and decide whether to charge Bryant, the townspeople are taking sides in what has become the biggest news story since a sinkhole took out a chunk of Interstate 70 a few months ago.
"Eagle is a small town that's maybe a little bit backward. People take sides and might be quicker to assume things about race or athletes or women," said Katie Ryan, 32, who works in Eagle.
"Nobody knows what really happened but that hasn't stopped people here from rushing to judgment."
The woman's name is being withheld by The Orange County Register because of the nature of the allegations. Bryant and his attorneys maintain his innocence.
Many men try to relate to Bryant, defending him. Many women sympathize with the former Eagle Valley High school cheerleader and aspiring singer who once tried out for "American Idol."
But most locals - men and women - have rallied around the hometown victim, showing an allegiance that some contend is a reflection the community's racial makeup.
According to the U.S. Census 2000, 13 of Eagle's 3,032 residents identify themselves as African American, while 2,437 as white. About 52 percent are male.
"Look around. All this is happening because they (the police) are just trying to keep another young brother down," said Mike Bonner, 36, an Eagle resident who is black.
"This town isn't easy on outsiders, especially the ones that stand out. I believe Kobe is getting set up because he's so different and has got so much more than anybody in this town."
While most townspeople quickly acknowledge that blacks are a minority, only a few are willing to say race had any factor in their judgment, however premature.
"He's a black basketball player like all those others who thinks he can do anything because he's got all this money," said Mike Shiplet of Vail. "That's what people are thinking even though a lot of people won't admit it."
Pastor Winsor Stough of the Eagle Valley Community Church, who leads a 100-person congregation that meets in the library of the Brush Creek Elementary School in Eagle, moved from Arcadia to Eagle three years ago.
"I make it my business to study people, and I think most people, not just in Eagle but all over, know the lifestyle of a pro athlete," said Stough, who is also a sports fan.
"We know about Wilt Chamberlain with all the women, Michael Jordan with the gambling, but with Kobe, we just wanted it to be, `Say it ain't so.' But maybe he's just like the others."
In his seven-year NBA career, Bryant had masterfully controlled his mass-appeal image, staying out of the legal troubles that brought bad-boy infamy to Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson (guns), Portland forward Rasheed Wallace (drugs) and New Jersey guard Jason Kidd (domestic abuse). Until now.
"I think people are comfortable here with multiculturalism because of all the tourists," Stough said. "I just think there's a rush to judgment because we're used to hearing certain things in general about athletes and the law."
In the days since Bryant's arrest, several male residents have been quick to speculate that the woman sought to get rich by inventing the story.
"I'll try to put myself in the place of the woman and believe that if Kobe were around, I'd be all over him and his money," said Jake Vanken, 16, who attended the Eagle Valley Senior High School along with the Eagle woman who filed the complaint against Bryant.
At the same time, female residents have jumped to the woman's defense:
"Nobody would come forward in this town with that kind of story if it weren't true," said Sharon Smith, 17, of Eagle. "No one would want that kind of rap, especially a woman."
"So often, the woman gets blamed because men always want to keep them down," said Daysi Spath, 34, a Latina who co-owns a bakery in Eagle.
"Differences stand out in this town. We just hope that they don't make a difference in how the law treats us," she said, turning the page in the Vail Daily to look at what else in happening in her hometown.

Common sense racial profiling would of course tend to make me lean towards believing her version of events, but I just read that [url=http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/1040.htm]she went to see "Bad Boys II" last Friday,[/url] a movie starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and that makes me a little suspicious. You'd think she'd be a little gun shy about Negro superstars after being raped by one. It may just be that she's completely devoid of any racial consciousness, after seeing her air-headed friends on televitz that's a real possibility, or she may have a thing for pipples of color. :afro:

You could be right, Recluse. You can bet there will be a change of venue for the trial, though, probably Denver, plenty of black saints in the jury poll, sure to result in a hung jury or acquittal for Bryan.
After the locker room came miscegenation, it all began when Jackie Robinson crossed the color-line. Lemmings believe the Jackie Robinson story was a good thing for America. I take the opposite view.
A hundred years ago Bryan would have been lynched.

Looking at it another way, this trial's going to cost the [url=http://christianparty.net/blackcosts.htm]White taxpayers[/url] millions of dollars, all because she wasn't racially aware enough to stay out of harm's way. We ought to demand some accountability here, at least some satisfaction from knowing that some lessons have been learned. That's the attitude I'd take to all the message boards where this will be discussed in the coming months.

I cite as evidence for this the number of Whites I know who've had purses snatched and guns pointed but STILL think "diversity is the dream, that poor lil' black fella just needs some love and nums-nums from us benevolent White folk."
That's how deep the brainwashing has been.

I did say a degree of awareness, enough so that they tend to move to areas that are more White rather than less after being ethnically cleansed. I didn't say it made them smart. Hell, here in eastern Missouri we have people who go out and demonstrate against immigration and affirmative action on weekends and then get on talk radio the rest of the week and defend George Bush! They're as aware as you can be but they're damn sure not smart. This girl should have at least reached a level where she was uncomfortable watching violent Negroes on screen. It's time for a little reciprocity here. She wants the White taxpayer to spend millions to see that she gets justice, while she's out putting money into the hands of black actors who would probably donate it to Kobe Bryant's defense fund if they thought he needed it to fight the White man. Screw her. Figuratively, of course, STDs and all that.
And for those who say she should be able to go anywhere she wants without fear of being raped, I agree. I also think that humans should be able to swim in any ocean in the world, but there are shark infested waters where it's not safe, and just as I resent being saddled with medical bills from those who are too stupid to stay out of dangerous water, I also resent being saddled with the legal costs caused by this bimbo's naiveté.

I have observed that those who are the most segregated tend to be the least racially aware. The girl in question was raised in a 90% White community. As such, her exposure to Africans has been limited as to what she has seen on MTV and the movies. I am quite sure that if asked a few weeks ago this girl would have considered ââ¬Åracismââ¬Â to be one of the greatest evils. Through leading a rather sheltered life she lacked the street sense to understand the danger. And by being raised in an immoral American culture she seems to not have an understanding of how young ladies should behave.
A young lady should never meet a man in a hotel room at midnight. This is a truism regardless of race. Meeting a young white man in a hotel room at midnight is risky. Meeting a young African male in a hotel room at midnight is insane.
From reading the reports, my guess is that the girl was star struck and arranged to meet Kobe late night in his room. She probably flirted with him and thought she would just have some innocent fun with him - the hip sex-in-the-city-MTV-white-girl who loves diversity and having fun. She was also raised with a good feminist education that teaches ââ¬ÅNo means No!ââ¬Â
The girl probably met Kobe in his room and started to laugh and flirt with him. Then things got a little hot and our proud suburban white girl told Kobe ââ¬ÅNoââ¬Â. And then much to the astonishment of our girl, Kobe probably ignored her and had sex with her anyway.
Is the above scenario rape? Yes, technically. But in the real world it will be hard to get a conviction.
The more interesting question is how did a young girl ever get the notion that meeting a young, African man in his hotel room at midnight was safe?

While I'm not going to defend Kobe, Newsweek and several other sources have said she is well known as an "NBA groupie" among other "star struck" references. Might be true, might not. What a waste, either way. That things like this happen in this country show how far it has fallen. When the day comes, will we have enough rope?

**Kobe accuser's wounds 'shocking'

The teenager who says she was raped by Kobe Bryant has "shocking" and still visible injuries from the alleged attack, a friend said yesterday.
"She covers them up with makeup - mostly, I think, to hide them from herself so she is not reminded" of the attack, said Starlene Bray, who has known the teen since grade school.
Three weeks after the 19-year-old woman emerged from the L.A. Lakers star's Colorado hotel room, the injuries are still "very visible," Bray said.
She refused to describe the injuries or say where on the woman's body they were. But she did say they were severe enough to be seen plainly despite the woman's attempts to hide them with makeup.
"They were shocking," said Bray, 19, who first saw her friend on Friday - the day Bryant was charged with one count of felony sexual assault. "I try not to ask her about the injuries, and I didn't even say I saw them the first time. She's very uncomfortable about that, and not comfortable talking about how it happened," Bray said.
Krista Flannigan, spokeswoman for the Eagle County, Colo., district attorney, declined to comment on the woman's injuries.
The woman, a student at the University of Northern Colorado, charges that Bryant raped her June 30 at the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera, near Vail, where she was working for the summer.
Bray said her friend told her the confrontation with Bryant was loud enough to have been heard by other guests on the same floor of the hotel. There have been published reports, unconfirmed by authorities, that guests complained about noise coming from Bryant's room.
The Daily News has learned that Bryant's bodyguards - who accompanied him to Vail for his knee surgery - did not stay on the same floor as the NBA star, which would be a typical security procedure.
"The bodyguards stayed on a separate floor," said Pete Webb, a Denver public relations consultant hired by the spa.
Bryant, 24, has admitted only to the "mistake of adultery" and insists the sex was consensual.
Meanwhile, rape counselors expressed outrage yesterday that a nationally syndicated radio host aired the name of Bryant's accuser.
Tom Leykis, whose Los Angeles-based show is aimed at young men, told Reuters it was unfair to publish Bryant's name and not his accuser's.
"That's like being raped again," said Dr. Patricia Saunders, director of Graham Windham Manhattan Medical Center in New York City. "It's a sadistic thing to do."

As an exercise to see if ulcer medicine really works, I caught the last part of the Michael SavageWeiner show last night on the way home.
He referred to Kobe's accuser as "White trash", "mountain trash" and "psycho" numerous times. Of course, I was pretty livid, and shouting non-PC things at the radio, which was, I suppose, the idea. Even now, the indentations from my hands are still in the steering wheel. I really couldn't help wishing that someone close to him gets Wichita-ed in the near future, though I doubt even that would make him refer to one of our duskier betters as "Black trash." After all, that would endanger his income!
Oh, and the medication really works.

Fans Launch "Free Kobe" website
A pair of sports fans have launched a Web site to take advantage of the Kobe Bryant legal situation, the Rocky Mountain News reported Wednesday.
Californian Jeff Reichman and Boston-area resident David Feingold have created a campaign and a retail store at www.freekobe.com, where they are offering T-shirts, coffee cups and hats.
The two men launched the site Tuesday in response to reports that Bryant, a guard/small forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, was arrested in Eagle County on suspicion of sexual assault. Bryant has not yet been formally charged.
"There are not really any superstars to look up to anymore," Reichman, 24, said to the newspaper. The site's creators, according to the newspaper, say they are seeking to "protect one of the few remaining role models in this tumultuous world of basketball fandom."
"It's not so much that we are huge fans of Kobe, but it's more that we are fans of the idea that there can be a hero, somebody to look up to in professional sports," Reichman said.
The T-shirts and hats sold on the site feature a "Free Kobe" logo and slogans such as, "Because we're running out of heroes."-- ESPN.com news services**

Eagle DA tightens security FBI investigates threats against office that charged Kobe Bryant

Saturday, July 26, 2003 - EAGLE - The FBI is investigating threats being made against the Eagle County district attorney's office, where intimidation has become so bad that the office door was locked for the first time Friday and visitors had to identify themselves before being admitted.
Krista Flannigan, the office's spokeswoman, would not elaborate on what type of threats the office was receiving, but said they targeted everyone from District Attorney Mark Hurlbert to staffers.
The threats began in earnest after Hurlbert charged basketball star Kobe Bryant with a Class 3 felony sexual assault on July 18 in connection with a June 30 incident involving a 19-year-old woman.
Flannigan said she did not know when the FBI began its probe. FBI officials were unavailable for comment.
The office has been discussing added security, but Hurlbert wouldn't elaborate on what kind. Even though staffers began locking the office door on Friday, anyone could still enter the building without signing in or going through a metal detector.
Flannigan said she didn't know whether Hurlbert has added personal security or beefed up protection at his home.
"I'd be reluctant to say either way just for his protection," said Flannigan, noting that disclosure of that information could jeopardize Hurlbert's safety.
The atmosphere of the small office has changed since the case broke and the threats began, Flannigan said.
"I think the tenor of the office has changed with this case," she said. "The level of exposure is much greater than it has ever been before."
While the threats are "certainly cause for concern," Flannigan said she thinks the employees are dealing with them well.
"I think that people feel that everything that can be done is being done and they can do the job that's expected of them," she said. "The office will do business as usual because there are other cases the DA handles besides this one."
Also Friday, Eagle County Court Judge Fred Gannett granted the request of several media organizations to have still and video cameras in the courtroom. County and court officials also met Friday to discuss media accommodations for Bryant's first court appearance Aug. 6.

The sickest aspect to this case is the media orgy. Like I am supposed to be on a firt-name basis with Toby oops Kobe Bryant. The Jew media is pushing the " feel bad for the guy " agenda while it's abvious that he forced himself upon the woman. If he did not, she would not have pressed charges. Then they paid off a few partygoers to say they overheard her say " Oh. but his dick was sooo big !! I just hope this girl hunkers down and insists on going to trial. If she can withstand the assault on her character by Kobe's high priced lawyers which is designed to force her to say "aw screw it" and walk away, she will have the advantage in court. Especially if she refrains from crackin gum and starting every sentence with "I'm like...." during her testimony.

The fact DA is pressing charges means the case is likely pretty good. These DAs do not like Court fights for the most part. The case looks like it is getting stronger. That's why Kobe's goons have been getting so nasty. I do hope the DA can take Kobe out!

Noone here is defending Bryant. I just see some things that make me suspicious. After watching Negroes destroy our neighborhood, my wife got to the point where she couldn't stand to even look at them, and this girl's going to black movies a week after she was raped. The DA hasn't denied this report that there was consensual sex, btw. If you want to force the White taxpayers to pay millions to see that this girl gets justice that's fine, but you ought to demand that she and others like her get some gd racial awareness and learn to avoid these kinds of dangerous situations.
