Are the chosenites even trying to muscle us out of the buisness of spectacular amoks?

Distraught mom leads cop on wild chase by Franci Richardson Thursday, July 17, 2003 (Boston Herald)

A Wellesley mother trying to convince her family she is sane enough to care for her 4-year-old son carjacked a good Samaritan and struck a state trooper while leading police on a wild chase to the North Shore, police and friends said.

She just jumped out in the street in front of me waving frantically,'' said Barry Fox, who had just dropped off his young daughter at day camp.I pulled over she was so distressed. I rolled down the window and said, I'll call the police for you.' She started to get in. She just got in and said,Drive.' I said, No, get out.' And she said,I have a gun.' '' Fox didn't believe Sheryl Sidman, 43, really had a gun - what scared him, he said, was her pulling his steering wheel yesterday morning, yelling at him to ``Get out.''

Finally, he stopped his 2002 navy Audi A6 on Route 9 near Newton and jumped out.

``I thought she was going to kill us, so I just pulled over,'' he said.

Sidman then drove the car onto Route 128, leading police on a chase ``at a very dangerous rate of speed,'' said state police Sgt. David Paine.

When temporarily stopped on the highway near Route 3A in Burlington, Sidman gunned the Audi at a state trooper, launching him over its roof, police said.

The trooper, whose identity was withheld, responded by firing a single gunshot, which missed Sidman. The trooper was taken to Lahey North in Burlington, where he was treated for leg injuries.

During the pursuit, Sidman called her mother, Naomi Kidder, in Peabody.

She said, `If I did something that wasn't right, don't be angry with me,'' her tearful mother recalled.I said, `Come home. I'll be here.' ''

Sidman then led police a block from her mom's home, where she struck two cruisers and then a guardrail, police said. She was taken to Lahey Hospital, then transferred to the Westwood Lodge, where she was kept in restraints and was heavily medicated, Kidder said.

A summa cum laude graduate of Boston University, Sidman was to be arraigned today.

I'm shocked that someone with her (mental health) history would be charged with anything,'' said a neighbor and friend, who didn't want to be identified.I hope they will give her a psychiatric evaluation. Sheryl is not a murderer.''

Police never found a gun, but did pull from the back seat of the Audi a cage containing Fox's female Shelty dog, Jillow, who was in good shape.

The horrific ordeal, friends and family say, marked the boiling point from the stress of a custody battle Alan and Sheryl Sidman are in with his brother and sister-in-law over the Sidmans' 3-year-old son, Daniel.

Sidman's long-awaited pregnancy came when she was 39, but spiraled her into a serious postpartum depression, adding to a history of mental illness, family and neighbors said.

Two years ago, said Alan Sidman, he and his ``soul mate'' of 20 years made the difficult decision to send Daniel to Colorado to live with his brother, Michael, and his family. The Sidmans conceded guardianship under certain terms, but were duped, Alan Sidman said last night, by his brother.

``Basically, they usurped our parental rights,'' he said.

Now the Colorado couple is refusing to return Daniel.

They had him calling them mom and dad,'' Alan Sidman said at his home last night. My wife and I have been trying to reunite with him. Their (resistance) has been a source of a lot of anxiety for myself and my wife.''

Reached yesterday, Michael Sidman could only say, ``Oh, for heaven sakes. I'm having trouble digesting this.''

During a guardianship hearing, Sidman asked several neighbors to write a character reference to leverage her custody battle.

``We didn't because we didn't know her well,'' said one neighbor, who wanted to be identified only as Rob.

And on Tuesday night, the couple's conversation with Michael Sidman didn't go very well.

We told them we wanted to work with them in a sensible nature to reunite,'' Alan Sidman said. But they didn't seem supportive.''

So yesterday morning about 8 a.m., the Sidmans got in their car and headed to Malden to ask his parents to intervene when the red engine light came on in their Audi.

She pulled over, got out and took the keys with her,'' said Alan Sidman, who watched as his wife got into Fox's Audi 300 yards away.I'm sitting in the passenger's seat like, `Gee, what's going on?' ''

Fox said he's learned an important lesson from the incident.

I feel like I'm always too nice a guy and I'm going to watch it in the future,'' he said.I don't know if it's worth the risk. My daughter needs me more than this woman did.''

Post-partum depression syndrome my sweet petootie. If the Boston area shysters are on the ball, they'll go for Post Holoco$t stress syndrome. With any luck, that'll get her off with a $150 fine for littering - leaving injured goys on the side of the road.
