**Colorado: Gay Rodeo Sets Record - Steer Riding By Drag Queens Featured
GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo featured the usual barrel racing, bull riding and team roping.
Among the few things that marked it as different, however, was steer riding by drag queens and the event in which two-person teams tried to put underwear on a goat.
The 21st annual rodeo, billed as the oldest gay rodeo in the country, was held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds during the weekend.
Competitors and spectators said it looked a lot like any other rodeo.
"From what I've seen, I don't think if Joe Public walked off the street, he would think anything was different at all," said Brenda Macombery, of Kalamazoo, Mich.
Rodeo clown Jerry Cunningham, who has worked the event for 14 years, said it is a rodeo first, and an event for gay competitors second.
He said attendance over the weekend appeared to set a record, with 2,000 fans expected each day. "Even the fairgrounds say it's one of the highest attended rodeos here," Cunningham said.
The rodeo moved from a park in Aurora three years ago. Wayne Jakino, founder of the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association, said the world has grown more tolerant of the event.
"Twenty-one years ago, we would not have been on Jefferson County Fairgrounds," he said.
In 1981, Jakino and a few other Denver cowboys heard about a gay rodeo in Reno, Nev. Jakino started the association soon after that.
"We're the granddaddy of the IGRA (International Gay Rodeo Association) circuit," he said.
The association raises money all year with drag shows and other fund-raisers to cover the $100,000 in costs to hold the event, said Angelo Vega, the group's northern outreach director and first runner-up in this year's Mr. Rodeo competition.
All proceeds raised from the $12 entrance fee and alcohol sales goes to eight charities. Last year, the rodeo contributed $26,000, rodeo spokesman Travis Moody said.
The rodeo attracts gay and straight competitors from around the country and Canada, he said.
"We have a lot more fun," Moody said. "We're not so serious."
