New Zealanders keen to keep out foreigners June 23 2003
Nearly two-thirds of New Zealanders believe that their country has cultural problems and more than half do not want any more immigrants, a new survey has found.
The NFO survey asked 6000 people if New Zealand had "some real cultural problems", with 65 per cent of respondents agreeing, and 9 per cent disagreeing.
The survey, between June last year and January this year, showed 53 per cent disagreed that New Zealand should have more immigrants, compared with 16 per cent who agreed.
Of those who did not want more new arrivals, Maoris were more opposed than people of other ethnic groups, the Sunday Star-Times reported.
About half of the respondents were positive about immigration, saying that it added diversity and was good for the economy.
Negative attitudes to non-Caucasians became stronger in New Zealand's south, with Aucklanders - who are more affected by immigration than other parts of the country - being the most tolerant.
An advertising campaign - "We're All New Zealanders" - is to be launched on Wednesday under the banner of the Human Rights Commission.
