Anyone have experience with GIS software. Might be interesting for everyone to start compiling GIS type maps of their area and start integrating all the city plot maps and other free info. Of special interest might be the location and marking of businesses and assets owned by various hostile groups. Precise GPS coordinates would be helpful to.

Start studying and documenting your area.

I'll post some more info later on what GIS is if needed. I think you will see the value immediately.

The below link describes a similiar but different effort and some of the legal ramafications.

What I would like to do is to tie all that information into a more sharable format. Also I'm more interested in private commercial information. Like locating and populating hostile media assets in a local area (blockbuster - viacom, etc). Knowing who owns what and looking at it from an overhead plot gives a lot of power to the information. Like tracking the spread of a disease, you can track the spread of certain influences. Then tie that GIS system into the WWW for all to see. I'll see if I can round up a good example that demonstrates.

Anyway its a ongoing interest of mine. If the sh*t ever hits the fan it would be nice to be able to print out maps of all the hostile locations. Its also helpful from a lot of points of view. In the destruction of neighborhoods, outsiders often buy up land and try to change the zoning. If you have water table maps intermingled the plot and elevation maps, you might be able to see at the click of a button some of the legal means you could use to hinder the development like stopping the use of their land through environment laws (wetlands). The key is to get the system set up and get the automatic feeds of data linked in so you can queury on and what, people and organization are doing.

Once these systems are setup, activity can all be done through the web (ie cyber politics).

far82sight,

Great Post, a subject worth taking about.

I would hope you know about the Mapquest site, you can most of that kind of thing. You can type in a zip code, Address/Intersection, Country, State, or city and get great Maps and Aerial Photos fast. You zoom in and out and mark Locations, make notes, save and print maps and Aerial Photos.

I saved an Aerial Photos of where I live, you can even see the trees in the front yard.

I love the mapquest.com site, it has most of what one needs and is free. I do there are also alot of software and CD-Rom you can get too, but the site is Free. Do you have a GIS program you like?

Look at the neat maps and Aerial Photos you can get.

Those are some great sites, truly amazing. Looks like there is enough info there to help in activities like relocating to a better area. Would be nice to combine the demographic with the public tax records and see who owned what, might help in moving to areas not completely dominated by certain groups. I think in general identifying these resources and maybe documenting good potential uses of them might be a good resource. I can't remember were I saw it (internet) but I remember not to far back a large "low income" housing project getting shut down because someone complained and filed the right kind of formal complaint about the building site being on a wetland " damn racist environment laws or some quote like that haha ".

I used to use ArcView a lot at work but I haven't touched it much lately. Its pretty good for managing "good" processed data. One of the things that ate up most of our time was processing data into a format such that it could be used for "calculations" or merging with other data. We used other programs, commercial and in house, for that. We never had a single "good" piece of software that large amounts of the combined and processed work could be stored in. From looking at the latest ArcView propaganda it looks like it might be up to the task.

To get the most bang for the buck you have to be able to accurately merge the different data types like overhead satellite or areal photographs, usgs terrain maps, more city type plot maps (don't know specific buss word for those), road maps etc (vector with raster types). That can be an tedious and difficult task and usually requires good quality well documented data. I'm not sure those WWW snap shots can be easily used for that, then again they might be. I want to break out my old books and docs and fire up the software again and see if I can show the power by putting together a database with those combined data types.

far82sight,

I have seen ArcView in action, it can do a lot stuff. You are not going to get neat merged maps like you can with ArcView, but you could get a lot done. The "Census 2000 Gateway" site has demographic data neatly listed, down to zip codes. I am sue one could make good maps with a bit of work.

I was watching tv, there was some company that creates virtual computer duplicates of whole cities, you can actually travel from street to street, block to block, building to building, on a virtual computer program that is identical to the real city. I don't remember the company name that created it, but you can search at Yahoo or Google for words like "virtual cities" or what have you.

A friend send me a program, developed by the "gubmint", that contains aerial maps of the Reno area. When I zeroed down on my street, the photos were so sharp, I could read the numbers on my house. Not only that, but, by running the curser over the area, the parcel number, owner, and other informatin popped up. All this info is available on the net. Not so sure I like this.
