ZAGREB, Croatia - Croatian fans smashed stadium chairs and attacked reporters Sunday night after their team lost the European water polo championship to Serbia and Montenegro. In Belgrade, celebrating Serbian fans broke into the Croatian embassy. No serious injuries were reported.
The violence in neighboring Slovenia forced organizers to skip the official ceremony and deliver the medals in a secluded part of the stadium.
Jura Ozmec, the commentator for state-run Croatian television, said he and several other reporters were attacked, but no one appeared seriously injured.
TV footage showed violent fans who apparently were not deterred by tear gas from police. One fan pushed a Croatian player who was pleading with the fans to stop.
Croatia Prime Minister Ivica Racan criticized the fans in a message congratulating the team for its silver medal. Serbia and Montenegro won 9-8 in Kranj, Slovenia.
"You represented Croatia wonderfully, unlike those vandals, who ashamed Croatia and who deserve our utmost condemnation," he said in a statement.
In Belgrade, several thousand fans marched to the Croatian embassy, where riot police initially failed to hold them back. Some fans made it onto a terrace of the building and replaced the Croatian flag with a Serbian one.
The fans, who chanted Serbian nationalist slogans, also threw stones at the building, smashing several windows. They also threw rocks at the building, smashing several windows, and also looted beer and cigarettes at two nearby kiosks.
The celebration had begun with a peaceful party at the main square, where at least 5,000 fans cheered, waved flags and set off firecrackers

Conveniently you have ommitted the report that Srb agitators, insulting the crowd, throwing items, making rude gestures, were the ones who provoked the reaction from the Hrvati who were only trying to enjoy the game. Typical for a Srb disinformationalist / troublemaker to leave out that very important fact. And, of course, conveniently you do not mention the Srb reaction to the events at a water polo game - why, they rioted and stormed a diplomatic embassy. A riot at a game is embarassing, but attacking another country's embassy is attrocious!
And what's up with this flaming bullshit? This seems to me to be a civillized forum and I don't think this trolling crap is doing anything for anyone. Why don't you go troll and flame somewhere else... If you want to DISCUSS ARTICLES not just throw gasoline on the flames your message - and you - would be more welcome.
This juvenile behaviour furthers nobody's cause or interests - unless, of course, your only interest is causing a disturbance!

Since it looks like I'll be working at the Olympics in an unnamed capacity next summer, maybe I'll have more action to look forward to than I originally expected.
The Hungarians and Russians had a more vicious battle - in the pool - in the 1956 Olympic games. What is it about Water Polo that brings out such violence? :D I guess I could go into soccer - real football in the rest of the world - or into the field hockey matches between India and Pakistan, but why interrupt the fight between you two?

Alka ~~~ Lay off the sauce. You know that all croats have the same problem. They run their suck when they are sauced. Back in the mid-90's at our Serb Festival, I posed a toast to the VRS heroes. This long-haired goldilocks croatian mumbed under his breath about Karadzic, the 4 four baba's (grandmothers) and my friend saved your friend. You guys can not stop running your suck while sauced.

Please. What a pathetic excuse at a comeback. Is acusing me of alcoholism the best you can do? Where's all the jokes you could have made about it being that time of month, etc.??
Sad, sad, sad... Did you enjoy your "special song?" It's just for people like you. Nutless and brainless. Did you know that spending too much time on a bicycle seat can render you sterile and impotent? Apparently it's having an effect on you mentally as well.
I've got a cat that needs washing. Maybe later I'll paint my toenails. And then... maybe... if I feel like it, I may amuse myself by perusing whatever grammar- and spelling- challenged reply you have been able to muster up out of that sponge that one may laughingly call your head...
