June 19: Another Chance to Stop the Media Monopoly Urge your Senator to support S. 1046!

Dear Citizen,

Despite tremendous criticism from the American public, the Federal Communications Commission voted (3-2) on June 2nd to allow mammoth media conglomerates to control even bigger portions of our nation’s airwaves. Already, five major corporations control the vast majority of media, particularly television. This ruling would only tighten that concentrated control what we see and hear, further limiting the diversity of ideas and opinions in the media that are essential to our democracy.

But there is hope! In the Senate Commerce Committee, a bipartisan coalition has introduced a bill that would reverse several FCC rules and re-establish ownership cap limits. And an important amendment sponsored by Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) would reverse rules allowing a company to own a newspaper and TV station in the same market.

Tomorrow, June 19, the Committee will vote on the legislation, S. 1046. Please take a few minutes today to urge your senator to support this bill. If your senator is not on the Committee, you can still urge her/him to contact their colleagues on the Committee.

To check if your Senator sits on the Committee, visit the Committee site: commerce.senate.gov/about/membership.html. To find out which Senator represents you, visit the Senate site: www.senate.gov/contacting/index.cfm. This is a critical fight in the battle to democratize media ownership. Please make your voice heard! Only with your participation can we protect democracy.
