La Raza Unida co-founder says Chicano movement needs ÃârenewalÃ¢â¬Å¡

Dallas lawyer JosÃÂ© Angel GutiÃÂ©rrez, co-founder of La Raza Unida and a fiery leader of the Chicano movement in the Ã¢â¬Å¡60s and Ã¢â¬Å¡70s, will host a conference at Our Lady of the Lake University [San Antonio, Texas] on Saturday to address what he calls a serious lack of leadership in the Chicano community. The conference will advocate a "leadership renewal," said GutiÃÂ©rrez, who is planning a statewide leadership conference this fall.

"Chicano organizational leadership has abandoned ship," he said. "They've lost focus. They've lost their spine. They don't even know who in the hell they are."

The conference begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. at Providence Hall, Blue Room 1. Call (214) 941-1900.

The 58-year-old activist is as confrontational as ever.

"We all know we are the sons and daughters of Mexicans, but (today's Hispanic leaders) all pretend to be anything but Mexican," GutiÃÂ©rrez said. "You won't hear people of Mexican ancestry in leadership saying they are Mexican. This is self-denial, self-hatred, a division of the family."

He is especially critical of the National Council of La Raza and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which he says have "become decrepit because our leaders won't move on."

"On the national level, these people believe in leadership for life," he said about Antonia Hernandez, [LVA: Antonia Hernandez' married surname is Stern. She is married to a Jew] MALDEF's president and general counsel, and Raul Yzaguirre, [Raul Yzaguirre is a Sephardic Jew] president of the National Council of La Raza. "These are not jobs for life. We need new blood here."

"Lost focus?" countered J.C. Flores, MALDEFÃ¢â¬Å¡s director of communications in Los Angeles. "We've been fighting on educational issues and winning for 35 years." Lisa Navarrete, a spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza, says her organization is conducting a national search for an executive director "and looking to the future." [LVA: Only because Yzaguirre has developed Alzheimer's]

Now that Hispanics have surpassed African Americans as the nation's largest minority group, GutiÃÂ©rrez said he is worried.

Everybody talks about how we're going to be the numerical majority," he said. "Of what? Dimwits? Where's the plan? Who's got the plan?

"I'm trying to educate our community again about pressing issues that people are not addressing, such as deregulation of college tuition, redistricting, affirmative action, minority contracting, immigration, economic development and the English-only movement.

The most important issue is public education, which GutiÃÂ©rrez says is leaving minorities behind. [LVA: The National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) is now a predominantly homosexual and lesbian organization. Its agenda is directed by the NACCS Joto and Lesbian Caucuses. Joto is Spanish for "Fag".]

Latino organizations "are creating charter schools, picking up the dropouts as a money-making scheme, he said.

He criticizes school boards led by Chicanos who can't fix "the same problems as 40 years ago, when we did walkouts to protest Anglo domination of the school districts."

GutiÃÂ©rrez is also promoting the sequel to his 1974 book "A Gringo Manual on How to Handle Mexicans." The new effort is titled "A Chicano Manual on How to Handle Gringos." He says the first was written when Mexican Americans were in a condition of powerlessness.

"At this juncture, we have a semblance of power," he said. "This (new) book is about having some power and impacting public policy."

"We're going to try and educate each other," he said of Saturday's conference. "There is no strategic plan for our community for the next 25 years by any organization that I know of.

"People aren't disconnected from the issues," he said. "The leadership is disconnected from the issues."

And according to some Freepers, these Hispanic groups may actually be the work of big, bad Pat Buchanan, and the evil anti-immigration crowd, who just want to make noble, hard-working Latinos look bad. And after all, Latinos are the future of the GOP--and America!

WASHINGTON, June 18 Ã¢â¬â The Hispanic population grew at nearly four times the rate of the U.S. population overall over the past two years, cementing LatinosÃ¢â¬â¢ position as the nationÃ¢â¬â¢s largest minority group, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday. HISPANICS NUMBERED 38.8 million as of July 2002, an increase of nearly 10 percent or 3.5 million since April 2000, census estimates show. The national population rose 2.5 percent during the same period to over 288 million. The non-Hispanic black population rose 3 percent in the 27-month span for which data is available, to 36.6 million. Hispanics passed non-Hispanic blacks in size in 2001. Non-Hispanic Asians were the next largest minority at 12.7 million, or 4 percent of U.S. residents. That population grew 9 percent over the 27-month span. The federal government considers Ã¢â¬ÅHispanicÃ¢â¬Â an ethnicity, not a race, so people of Hispanic ethnicity can classify themselves as any race.

REPORT SEEN AS CONFIRMATION The census report on the rapidly growing Hispanic population Ã¢â¬Åconfirms what communities across the country have been witnessing for a while,Ã¢â¬Â said Gabriela Lemus, director of policy and legislation for the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Lemus said she hoped that Hispanic advocacy groups would use the opportunity to renew outreach efforts especially in small towns and rural areas across the South and Midwest. Many places that did not have large Hispanic populations before the 1990s have struggled to deal with the needs of recent immigrants with limited English skills. ItÃ¢â¬â¢s a mistake, though, for Latinos to view the demographic shift as a contest, said Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center, a research organization. Politically, Hispanics trail blacks in clout because a larger number of Latinos are undocumented or younger than 18 and therefore cannot vote, he said. Ã¢â¬ÅThe census numbers have a way of rendering things official,Ã¢â¬Â Suro said. Still, he added, Ã¢â¬ÅThis is not at all a measure of the power and influence between the two populations.Ã¢â¬Â Non-Hispanic whites, who make up about 7 of 10 U.S. residents, remain the largest single group at roughly 200 million. That population grew by less than 1 percent between April 2000 and July 2002. Meanwhile, Hispanics comprise 13.5 percent of the total population, and non-Hispanic blacks were 12.7 percent. The 2000 head count showed the Latino population more than doubling during the 1990s, and analysts said it was spurred in large part by immigrants seeking jobs. The latest population estimates were to be announced Wednesday by Census Bureau director Louis Kincannon at a League of United Latin American Citizens convention in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

DEMOCRAPHIC, SOCIOECONOMIC DATA The bureau also released a report with more detailed demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of Hispanics. Among findings about Latinos in the United States: Two-thirds are of Mexican descent. One-third are younger than 18, compared with about one-fifth of non-Hispanic whites. Two in five were born outside the country. About two in five Hispanics age 25 and older have not graduated from high school. Those of Puerto Rican and Cuban backgrounds were more likely to have a high school degree than Mexicans. Their poverty rate of 21 percent was nearly three times greater than that of non-Hispanic whites. Advocates hoped the demographic shift would help draw blacks and Hispanics closer in terms of social and political clout, instead of driving a wedge between the two groups. Collectively, both groups share many of the same socio-economic problems, said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACPÃ¢â¬â¢s Washington bureau. Tabulating population data by race and ethnicity is something of an inexact science because of the way the government categorizes people. The process became even more confusing in 2000 after the Census Bureau allowed people to identify themselves by more than one race. About 1.7 million people in July 2002 were identified by the government as black and Hispanic, while 36.3 million said they were white and Hispanic. The Associated Press has used the non-Hispanic population figures for blacks and whites since data from the 2000 census was released in April 2001. The figures include those of one or more races. No state or local data were released in the latest bureau report.

I can't imagine why White Americans are letting this atrocity continue. You don't even have to watch the news, just look outside your window to see brown swine on your street. This Hispanic taking over is going to upset your already evil and violent black population and I think we will see big riots coming. I just hope that White peoples aren't the target. They have the same problems in France, England, Netherlands with musulmans and afriques. This must end with massive deportations and cleansing the West of diseased and useless immigrants. The White West must be saved!

It's almost like it HAS to happen, in order for the cigar to finally blow up in everyone's faces. Once that happens, then things will turn. The "latinos" lucky enough to march back to May-hee-co and points South are going to be the fuel for some fireworks in those turd buckets, because there will be no social infrastructure to handle the repatriated apes, and no cash from whitey forthcoming.

Whitey will end up being the target.... After all, we are the only ones capable of being bad and racist. The blacks and the mestizoes may begin to fight each other for food, but after a while the compassionate democrats and the butt-kissing neocons will be there with a truckload of welfare checks once the Brown Ones calm down and stick their hands out.

Wrong. The "attacks" on 9/11 were a television event to most Americans. When Jose or Darnell are on Joe Sixpack's front lawn, running a train on his daughter and tossing bricks through his living room, then he'll wake up.

It has to be personal. I've seen whites in CA finally start waking up now that the brown sludge has screwed up so much of the state's infrastructure causing it to revert to the Wild West.
