STAMFORD -- One of the two men accused of beating and sexually assaulting a jogger in Darien appeared in court locally for the first time yesterday.

Alejandro Mendez, 18, of 17 Chestnut St., Norwalk, was arraigned in state Superior Court in Stamford yesterday on charges stemming from the April 13 attack.

Mendez and 34-year-old Jose Amaya, of 16 Larsen St., Norwalk, are charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree sexual assault and second-degree assault. Mendez was arrested last month in Los Angeles on a $750,000 warrant.

He waived extradition and was transported to New York on Wednesday by federal marshals, Darien police Lt. Ron Bussell said.

Two Darien detectives picked Mendez up at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., and took him to the Darien Police Department for booking, Bussell said.

Mendez told detectives he was 18, but they had no way of verifying his age, Bussell said. He has used other ages, Bussell said.

Darien police have said they believe both men are day laborers who were in the United States illegally. **
