From Parade Magazine June 8, 2003 page 17

We know DNA as a tool for crime-solving and medical research, but now it’s helping African-Americans to find their ancestors. A black-owned firm, African Ancestry Inc., is selling tests to those who want to trace their African roots. (Most have limited genealogical records, because their forbears came here as slaves.) The company’s DNA database includes gene sequences collected from 82 different populations in west and central Africa, the source of most slaves from1619 to 1850. A test will compare a person’s DNA with the sequences from these and other African regions. It’s $349 and requires just a swab of cells from inside the mouth.

One of the first people to use the registry was Dr, Rick Kittles, a molecular biologist at Howard University, who created the concept and co-founded African Ancestry Inc. “The DNA I inherited from my mother matched DN common among the Hausa people of northern Nigeria,” says Kittles. “I went there and saw people who looked like my relatives in the U.S. and I felt a strong sense of community.” Visit www.africanancestry.com for details. :afro:

I think this DNA tests are great. Eventually, it will be cheaper and many times better. Right now, most tests are geared towards Africans, Indians, and mixed race peoples. I've been waiting for one to come out claiming to be a suphisticated test of European ancestry, and identify regions of Europe where your genes came from.

Here are some that specializes in identifying Hispanics and other mixed race people. Ancestry.com has one that sounds the best http://www.familytreedna.com/ftanc5.html

They two tests. One for you paternal line and one for your maternal line. Each test claims to find "deep ancestral ethnic origins"

Ancestry.com has packages as low as $150, but their premier package is nearly $600.

DNAWorks: DNAWorks is the most comprehensive DNA test available in the market for genealogy and anthropology purposes. It puts together the power of the Y-DNAPlus, mtDNA and DNAPrint, allowing you to establish a clear picture of your ancestry. Besides checking your 25 marker Y-DNA and the mtDNA for your paternal and maternal lineages respectively, it also gives you a report based on the DNAPrint analysis, which establishes in clear percentage terms your deep ancestral anthropology as to the major population groups. (e.g. Native American, East Asian, Indo-European, sub-Saharan African, etc.) Because it includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males

It still uses the term "major population groups." I don't want to spend $600 just to learn I'm Indo-European. In a few years they will probablhave a test for one third the price that tells you three times as much.

They need a European package thats puts you into European ethnic groups.

Anyone want to start a company to conduct DNA Geneology tests geared towards Europeans?

We will need a few people with perfect credit who can get a huge bank loan. At least one person with a microbiology degree for credibility. I have a degree in computer engineering and experience in web design and running a small business.

I just wanted to add, I wonder if Bushy will propose (under the advice of Rove, of course) some kind of voucher/tax credit for Blacks who want to discover their "roots," in yet another futile attempt to buy the Black vote...

"For far too long, African-Americans have been denied their history. This tax credit, which will provide every African-American family up to $500 to search for their ancestors, will help to remedy that injustice."

"Thanks for the money, Bush. But I'm still voting Democrat come November, you dumb cracker.
