Personally, I use ZoneAlarm Plus, it is a great proxy. it blocks every unauthorized communication from the computer, or trying to get into the computer. For privacy, I use AdAware and RegCleaner. Any suggestions?

Change your browser. Explorer has plenty of spies in the software that ZoneAlarm won't touch.

Use Mozilla or Opera.

Opera 7.11

:th:

Pound for pound, the hands-down FASTEST browser I've ever used.

Mozilla is not bad, but it is much slower. It doesn't have the advertising though, like Opera.

Yeah, forget the software and get yourself a broadband router that does Network Address Translation (NAT), available for $50 or so at your nearest Best Buy, Frye's, etc.

As long as you don't enable port forwarding or DMZ mode, there's no way the skiddiots can access your box because it's on an internal network of private IP addresses.

Popular brands are Linksys, D-Link, and SMC.

I use a Linksys BEFSR41 and have nothing but kudos for it:

If you're on dial-up you can either try a 3Com OfficeConnect 56K LanModem, which does address translation similar to a broadband router, or you can get a cheap PC to be your dialup gateway (which could also function as a broadband gateway as well). If it's running Win32, use WinRoute (WinGate sucks). Or you can use IP masquerading in Linux, or use one of the packet filtering firewalls in *BSD, such as OpenBSD's pf or FreeBSD IPFW.

As for browsers, the new Mozilla Firebird is fast and its code will be incorporated into future releases of the Mozilla Broswer. I believe Mozilla 1.4 (which just released) is the last version to use the old codebase. You might wanna get the Firebird v0.6 beta and check it out.

TD-

Liked Opera, but it kept crashing on me, and java was perpetually scrooged.

Mozilla is def. slower though.

mozilla mozilla mozilla

But yeah, it is slow. I use an older version ( 1.1, on Linux) and it works great. I did download and install 1.3 but it was noticibly slower, at least on my dinosaurish 433Mhz Celeron.

I really like Mozilla, but find it doesn't always work right on sites (e.g., Delta.com) because I've got my security up so high.. SO I end up switching between IE, Netscape AND Mozilla, when I have to buy something. Maybe I should try Opera too? :P

But I like that Mozilla disallows pop-ups, and I don't find it dreadfully slow except to load when I first open it. And I like that it's open source!

Anyone knows the origin of the name "Mozilla"? It's Mosaic Killer.

I checked Tiny's website, they're on v4.5 (not free). V2.0 (free) was a little rough (for novices) and is probably getting a bit dated. Compare to free firewalls like Sygate (good and easy) or Kerio (=Tiny 2.1.5, WinXP support).

People usually think Tiny is easier to use than ZoneAlarm, etc., because of its comparative simplicity. As for "dated", it's only a year and a half old; IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP have not changed in that time (nor is there anything new), and it works just fine on XP... Like the saying goes, why mess with success? :)

(Last I looked, Sygate was also pretty decent--and had almost the exact same interface as TinyPF2.)
