**Health-care recommendations rejected

Cost of service for illegal immigrants targeted By Michelle Rester, Staff Writer

Recommendations intended to curb illegal immigration and the estimated $350 million per year Los Angeles County spends providing immigrants free health care have been shot down.

County supervisors Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky cast the majority "no' vote earlier this week.

Yaroslavsky and Molina say they aren't necessarily opposed to recommendations made by Supervisor Michael Antonovich who asked that the board urge federal legislators to create temporary guest work permits and to require their employers to put up health-insurance bonds.

Their dissent is more about jurisdiction. Yaroslavsky said it's a federal issue. A Molina spokesman said she would rather analyze legislation already created, rather than suggest concepts to lawmakers.

A spokesman for Antonovich, however, said the supervisor is expected to continue pressing federal legislators to move forward with his ideas.

Last year, the county spent about $350 million on health care for illegal immigrants, according to a report from the Department of Health Services.

"It was really a recommendation and urging on behalf of the Board of Supervisors to the federal government to investigate ... a proactive solution to the problem,' said Antonovich spokesman Tony Bell. "To dismiss it outright is troubling.'

The county's health-care system is facing a $200 million-plus deficit within the next few years, and officials are moving forward with plans to close hospitals to meet the shortfall. They already have shut down 16 health clinics countywide.

Antonovich's motion also included a suggestion to create clinics on both sides of the border to prevent residents from Mexico and elsewhere from coming to Los Angeles for treatment.**

Yep... even though the system is in total meltdown and US Citizens are dying from lack of care. The elected bozo's in CA would rather continue to provide incentives for more illegal immigration and force taxpayers to pick up the tab for illegals than do something about it.

The income redistribution continues...not only for those Citizens who won't work, but for Mexican Nationals too. Even the lone voice of dissent want's to cure the problem by using taxpayer monies to build clinics in Mexico....Great.

Yea, why not give them free health care.. after all, the Chinese are massing in Panama and Nicaragua, ready to march through Mexico with Mexican support. Mexicans want New Mexico, Arizona and half of California. Let them come.. let's help them and pay for their kitty litters. Why not, after all we got no country worth speaking of. When I see the flag waving, I only think of a past ideal........
