Bride sends groom to jail after dowry fight

May 14 2003 at 10:24AM

New Delhi - A 21-year-old Indian woman who packed her husband-to-be off to jail minutes before their wedding because he asked for more dowry has become an overnight celebrity, said news reports.

Hundreds of women have been rushing to software engineer Nisha Sharma's home to commend her bravery. Several men have sent her marriage proposals.

A lawyer in the country's Supreme Court has offered to fight any case for her free of cost. And a local politician is encouraging her to contest the next state elections, the Times of India newspaper reported.

Sharma was to marry Munish Dalal on Sunday. Over 2 500 guests had arrived at the wedding venue. The traditional fire had been lit and the priest was waiting for bride so that the Hindu rituals could begin.

'It's a difficult decision to take' It was then that Sharma heard that her father had been abused and beaten by the groom's family and his mother had demanded an additional 1 200 000 rupees (26,00 U.S. dollars) as dowry.

Sharma took out her cellphone, dialled the police emergency number and told them there was a fight over dowry at the wedding venue.

Sharma's father told the Indian Express newspaper: "When there are more than 2 500 guests at your daughter's wedding, it's a difficult decision to take. But I realised that if Nisha married Munish, their blackmail and demands wouldn't end."

The Sharmas said they had already spent 1 800 000 rupees on the wedding. Their house is cramped with electronic goods like washing machines, refrigerators, music systems, air conditioners, even a car - much of this demanded by the groom and his family - all part of the trousseau.

Most Hindu weddings are paid for ...............

Hey, hold on Madrussian. Maybe rban's on to something. A house crammed with goods, even a car? If my wedding had ... wait a second. I can't use rupees. Or a house made of mud. Forget it.
