By Michael Puente / Post-Tribune staff writer
VALPARAISO ââ¬â The 44-year-old son of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan was arrested by the Indiana State Police following a hit-and-run incident early Saturday afternoon.
Nasir H. Farrakhan of the 4800 block of Woodlawn in Chicago was being held at the Porter County Jail here on probable cause for multiple charges resulting from the collision with another vehicle.
The probable cause charges are:
ââ¬â Operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
ââ¬â Driving with a suspended license.
ââ¬â Leaving the scene of personal injury accident.
ââ¬â Possession of drug paraphernalia.
As of 9 p.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the jail said Nasir Farrakhan was still in the jail and had yet to be processed.
It was unknown if and when Farrakhan would be bailing out of the jail. Although he will be allowed to post bail, the spokesman did not know the amount of the bail.
According to the state police, Farrakhan was driving his 4-door 1997 Hummer east on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County.
Shortly after 1 p.m., Farrakhan struck the rear of a gold 2000 Honda passenger car driven by 73-year-old Charles Peterson of Gary.
State police reports that Farrakhan did not stop following the collision but allegedly fled the scene.
Farrakhan exited the Toll Road but was stopped by LaPorte County police.
Farrakhan was arrested on the various charges and transferred to the Porter County Jail.
A spokesman with the Indiana State Police Toll Road Division confirmed that Nasir Farrakhan was indeed the son of the famous minister.
The case was investigated by state police Troopers Mike Young and Pete Bradley, according to a report.
Petersonââ¬â¢s wife, Gladys, was taken to Porter Memorial Hospital here to be treated for neck and back pain.
Gladys Peterson, 62, was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The Petersons could not be reached for comment.
State police report about $5,000 worth of damage to Petersonsââ¬â¢ vehicle. Farrakhanââ¬â¢s vehicle did not sustain any noticeable damage.
