By JONATHAN MILNE

The Fascist National Front has set up a militia to defend New Zealand against Asian "invaders".

A coup in the hardline organisation, which represents skinheads and other extreme right-wingers, has set in place a new, young leadership that claims the loyalty of about 300 members from Auckland to Invercargill.

As part of the front's newly aggressive stance, it began preaching a gospel of nationalism and racism on the internet this month and soliciting for militia members through gun clubs.

The party has been bolstered by the success of French National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, who ran second to Jacques Chirac in last year's presidential election.

Christchurch spokesman "Todd Sweeney" - he refused to give his real name - said the militia was still at a development stage but was represented by a handful of members in each main centre.

"Newer, younger people have moved in and started taking over," he said yesterday.

"The leadership has no skinhead involvement but because it's a political organisation, skinheads are drawn to the patriotic, nationalistic side of it. If they want to do good for what they believe in, then we support them in that.

"We see that the government doesn't take care of the military needs of New Zealand, so we see the only way to truly defend New Zealand from aggression from countries such as Indonesia is for us to arm ourselves and train ourselves.

"We are working on getting enough people in gun clubs to be able to get the training needed for each individual."

He said New Zealand faced not only a military threat but also invasion through Asians taking over the government.

"We believe allowing immigrants to come from Asia is a big threat to our national security."

John Howat, chairman of the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners, said he did not believe many National Front militia members could be in gun clubs, because of the "substantial" legal requirements for getting a gun licence.

"There may be one or two in clubs round the country, people who look fairly normal, but that is not going to give them extensive access to firearms. If they did infiltrate the clubs, they'd be very quickly found out."

National police headquarters spokesman Jon Neilson said police were monitoring the National Front, as with any organisation of that type, but would not comment further on security matters.

The National Front website's policy on defence says the "capitalist government" cannot be relied on, and so "if an invader comes, you can take action yourself".

It suggests organising cells and recruiting members. Actions range from sabotaging invaders' vehicles by dropping salt or sand in their petrol tanks, to bombing invading armies and assassinating their leaders.

Other policies include accepting only European immigrants, repatriating or deporting other migrants and castrating or executing all sex offenders.

"Even if the government is scared of an armed society, we must be prepared! The national defence of any country is a top priority. If the government won't defend us, we shall defend ourselves. Arm ourselves and train ourselves," the website says.

"It is proven in history that many so-called violent criminals (who killed to defend their family or themselves) are only criminals in peace time but in war, they are heroes."

Government MP Ashraf Choudhary said he and the government were trying to create a more harmonious society and groups like the National Front were totally unacceptable.

"This kind of racism is intolerable. I can't see how the Asians are gong to take over the country when we are only 6% of the population and are the most peace-loving people."

He blamed NZ First leader Winston Peters for inciting "disharmony and possible violence".

"The ethnic and migrant communities are increasingly scared of this kind of divisiveness and the extremist elements that are coming out."

Blair Peach, a 33-year-old Napier teacher, had a London school named after him after he died in 1979 during an anti-fascist protest against a British National Front meeting.

Good news for once and from a really unlikely place. I like the "only 6 percent and the most peace-loving people" part. True idiocy. Our forefathers were damn sure peace-loving to the Mohawks when they first came off the ship.

Let's hope the Kiwis remember how the world really works. ;)

This sounds like a government honey trap.
