Stump to step down due to health problems
Associated Press April 26, 2002
WASHINGTON - Rep. Bob Stump, the Arizona Republican who is chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said Friday he has "serious health problems" and won't seek a 14th term this fall. Stump released a statement announcing his decision. He did not elaborate on the nature of the illness.
"Recently, I learned that I have some serious health problems and have been undergoing tests," Stump said. "For that reason, I have decided not to seek re-election and will return to farming at the end of this term."
Stump, 75, was elected to the House as a Democrat in 1976. He changed parties in 1981 after voting for President Reagan's tax cuts and has been elected 10 times since by comfortable margins.
A consistent supporter of increased military spending, he took over the Armed Services chairmanship last year and has used his position to push for President Bush's missile defense plan, a pay raise for military personnel and $2 billion in additional military construction.
Stump has only a skeleton staff and sometimes answers his own office phone.
"He always shunned the limelight, but got the job done," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. "As Bob returns full-time to Arizona, he will leave a lasting impression in Washington as an effective legislator and a distinguished public servant."
A staunch conservative, Stump angered immigrant groups with legislation to make English the official language for government business and to change laws so children born in America to noncitizen parents would not be U.S. citizens. Neither bill became law.
He also sponsored legislation and was a leading advocate for the construction of a World War II memorial on the National Mall.
Stump is the 18th Republican and 27th House member to announce retirement. Republicans hold a 222-211 advantage in the House and GOP leaders are confident they can retain Stump's seat in the Republican-leaning district in northwestern Arizona.
Stump served as a Navy medic in the South Pacific during World War II, then returned to his family's cotton and sheep farm in Tolleson, Ariz. He was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1959 and served four terms, then was elected to five terms in the state Senate.
He has three children and five grandchildren.

Bob Stump is perhaps the closest analogue to Rep. Ron Paul in Congress today--an uncompromising Constitutionalist in letter and spirit; a true "paleocon" and gentleman.
I had occasion to meet him during my tenure in Arizona politics ('85-'88), and it took only one single phone call to gain entry to his office and have a personal meeting with the man; a gang of Birchers were seeking sponsorship for Rep. Phil Crane's House Resolution 97, which would have cut off all aid, credits, exports, etc., with the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact satellites. We presented Stump with the legislation, he looked at it, and almost immediately, said, "Well, of course!" He and the late Rep. Eldon Rudd signed it (it failed in the House, of course), while McCain and homo Pubbie Jim Kolbe would not.
Stump also served on the Board of Advisors to Western Goals Foundation--the foreign affairs and intelligence arm of the John Birch Society, run by the late Rep. Larry McDonald, who was shot down aboard KAL 007 (also serving on Western Goals' Board were Phil Crane, former Senator Steve Symms and the villified/persecuted Congressman George Hansen, who was tossed in the clink for 4 years for alleged IRS violations).
FYI.

The only bad thing I can think to say about Congressman Bob Stump is maybe he was to much of gentleman. He voted the right way and did his best to protect America. I read he had the best anti-immigration voting record of any Congressman in the state. But with Treason that goes on in Washington; I think one needs to get mad and make noise.
People should think of men like Bob Stump; and stop pushing for term limits.

Gordon Liddy lost my listenership & support when he went full-hog for John McCain in the 2000 GOP primaries. If the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, his son can't be much better.
Liddy should've shut his mouth, or supported Keyes (a bit of a neocon, but not a traitor like McCain) or Howard Phillips, on principle.
As regards The Field of candidates to replace Bob Stump, I'm supporting Trent Franks--I knew him and worked with him, when he was a State Rep.; he's a bit of a Bible-thumper for some folks' tastes, but he's right-wing and not an Establishment fixture. At 44, he's young and dynamic (and pro-JBS). FYI.

Faust, Todd,
Thanks for the information. I figured that was the case, but wasn`t sure about his son.
We recently got Gordon back on the radio here and he said three things in about as many minutes that you will find amusing. I learned this:
The Trilateral Commission is nothing more than a group of "businessmen" who get together to discuss "business."
The E.U. is nothing more than a "United States of Europe" that wish to avoid what the U.S. did under the Articles of Confederation in regard to indivdual states having tariffs, ect.
The term "New World Order" was actually used by the Nazis first. (!! ) Of course when we use it we shouldn`t worry.
See what you can learn from the radio?
To use Liddy`s language about himself "that makes him a nitwit!"

Funeral held for longtime Arizona congressman Bob Stump - San Francisco Chronicle - Jun 25, 2003
(06-25) 17:49 PDT GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) --
Four F-16 fighter jets roared over a cemetery where hundreds gathered Wednesday for the funeral of Bob Stump, a former congressman who represented Arizona for 26 years.
Stump died Friday of a rare blood disorder. He was 76.
"We will miss him, the twinkle in his eyes, the warmth of his smile, the quiet conversations and the encouraging words," his family said in a statement.
"He was a humble man who worked well with people because he cared more about them than his own ego," said former Gov. Jane Hull after the funeral.
Stump, a Republican who served as chairman of the House committees on armed services and veterans affairs, was a strong conservative and a consistent supporter of increased spending on veterans and the military.
Friends and colleagues described Stump, who had only a small staff, no press secretary and sometimes answered his own office phone, as passionate, loyal and courageous.
Stump was elected to the House as a Democrat in 1976. He changed parties in 1981 after voting for President Reagan's tax cuts, and announced in April 2002 that health problems would keep him from seeking another term.
