Task force looks at claims of hip-hop party ban, racism at nightclubs
News Sentinel Mar. 31, 2003
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Mayor Bart Peterson has asked a task force to examine claims that some nightclubs in a north-side neighborhood discriminate against blacks by agreeing to limit when rap music can be played.
"I'm concerned because there is a suggestion that not everybody is welcome in Broad Ripple," Peterson said last week. "If that is the perception of some people, then it is an issue we should examine."
The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, a civic group formed in the 1960s to promote unity and community growth, will address the concern that some club owners in the Broad Ripple neighborhood made a pact to avoid hip-hop parties on weekends.
The concern began when J.Y.'s, a dance club, drew criticism from other bars' owners for hosting hip-hop parties on weekends.
The same group examined police-community relations at Peterson's request after complaints at Indiana Black Expo in July.
Some neighborhood leaders and business owners have denied accusations of racism but criticized J.Y.'s for its music.
"If you play this gangsta rap, it brings in gangbangers," said City-County Councilman James Bradford, a Republican whose district includes Broad Ripple. "I'm not going to let Broad Ripple get out of hand."

So you own a business, make a decision about the type of entertainment you choose to provide and that now calls for an investigation because your a racist?
Good news now you can wander into your local Hip Hop joint and demand the "homies" start playing Clint Black....Right?

It's not only music. NYC has ruled by decree banning ALL SMOKING in bars and nightclubs under penalty of fine. The city I grew up in and knew is RIP. The grimy, dangerous, artistic, European style city has morphed over the recent years to a paradoxical suburb of itself. It's all quite very Yiddish. A CVS on Bleecker Street a few years back. Disgraceful. Disney's invasion of 42nd St., disgraceful. Running parking meters on Sundays, disgraceful.
I know people who work in and own bars and lounges. They're unanimously saying that NO SMOKING will NOT help business for sure, especially in a weakened economy.
Anyways, its awfully draconian and totalitarian to force supposedly free enterprise establishments to the will of the State, instead of self-determination by the people. But isn't that what we've been fighting for for years now?
But hey, a woman can still get an abortion whenever she wants. But don't light up that Marlboro in a bar when that frosty pint of Sam Adams comes your way!! And darnit, there better be Ja Rule and Busta Rhymes on that jukebox too, or we're shuttin' ya down!!!
Yea, and they "hate us for our freedom".....what a sick joke.

It's far worse than that, X-Met. Michael Bloomberg...the Gauleiter of Bloomingdale's....successfully colluded with the governments of NY state, NJ and CT to make it a three-state-wide ban.
And remember....silk-drawers socialist Bloomberg was the Republican candidate. But according to David Frum, it's those people - who object to such tax-and-spend social engineers ruling our lives - who are in the way, taking up space.
Translation: somewhere out there is a fresh H1-B alien who'll happily work your job at 2/3 pay, put up with every tariff and edict imposed on him and still say "please" and "thank you" afterwards....so who needs you, White Man? - with your bitterness over how the world you lived in was sold off and torn down; your anger and fear over the racial chaos we shove down your throat daily for your own good; your vivid memories of a white America, one that worked, where life meant something more than figures on a balance sheet; and your dangrerous new insistence that somebody's responsible for all this and should be made to pay? Move over and make room for the next toxic human spill being added to the melting pot....and don't forget - BIG grins! Diversity is our greatest strength!

Make that 4 contiguous states, Ragno, Delaware implemented no smoking in B's and R's last fall. The geezers in those Femwick Island bars with 11 to 7 Happy Hours have all shifted 1/8 mile south into Ocean City Md.
Funny thing is if you talk to one of the Delaware bar owners they will tell you it makes their life a lot easier. Now if they could just get the drugs out of them. No smoking in those Rehoboth gay bars but I'm told the drugs are everywhere.
I don't know how Bloomberg made his money but he is Johns Hopkins U's biggest donor. And that is saying something. That almost anonymous school has an endowment rivaling some Ivy Leaguers.
I haven't been in NYC in 25 years. But Disney in Times Square has to be an improvement over the way I remember it. Nothing but peeps and sex shops in 1977. All the great movie theatres from the 30's converted to sex shows. I'm curious as to what stands on the site of The Taft hotel which was right behind the Wintergarden. I stayed in that once fine fleabag many a night.
