Famed Nazi hunter speaks out in favour of war with Iraq
March 17, 2003
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Famed Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal on Monday backed US and British plans to go to war with Iraq, warning it was more dangerous to ignore Saddam Hussein than to attack him.
Wiesenthal, 94, a Holocaust survivor who has made a career out of bringing to justice Nazis who fled into hiding at the end of World War II, evoked the world's reluctance to tackle Adolf Hitler when he came to power in 1933.
"I know that in any conflict many innocent lives will be lost," Wiesenthal said in a statement issued by his Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.
"But history has taught us that the consequences of ignoring evil and terror pose and even greater risk for mankind," he said a day after the US and British leaders warned "the moment of truth" in the conflict had arrived.
Wiesenthal said that the Saddam had "refused to listen" for 12 years and that US President George W. Bush and his allies Britain and Spain did "not seek to conquer Iraq but to confront a dictator who has used weapons of mass destruction and committed genocide against his own people.
"My experience has taught me that we cannot wait indefinitely on dictators, " said Wiesenthal, who lost 89 members of his family in the Nazi Holocaust.
"Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, but for six years the world did not act. Had he been taken seriously then, the lives of innocent millions may have been spared."
The comments came as Bush was poised to give Saddam a final ultimatum Monday to quit Iraq or confront US-led military action during a televised speech to the nation at 8:00 pm (0100 GMT Tuesday).
The Simon Wienthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights groups in the United States, boasting a following of around 400,000 families across the country.

It is a sad spectacle that we are about to witness.
Yesterday there was a picture of Iraqi kids playing in what looked like a dugout surrounded by sand bags. One was a beautiful blonde haired little girl who looked like the one in the old Dick and Jane readers. Blonde arab kids are usually carefully edited out of our newscasts by our controllers.
One wonders what the fate of these kids will be.
Fox news' hawkish behavior reminds me of Hearst and the Spanish-American War of 1898. The creep O'Reilly can smell the money. His nostrils are flared out like a bull in spring.
And like '98 this one is just another big bully beating up on the 6th grade nerd who likes to wash the chalk boards after school.
I've also noticed that news coverage of the American host now is careful to place black troops in front of the camera.
All the propaganda is being carefully managed.
Hussein looked haggard yesterday. Big bags under his eyes. But he still looks better than W. who looks like he has dysentery or tertiary syphilis.
Hussein's prospects are grim indeed. He's got to be scared of an assassination before the balloon goes up. And his chances of surviving the war are zilch. He is about to get the same royal treatment that JFK gave the Diem family in Vietnam.
So now we've heard from Simon W. The J's are about to trot out their pantheon of 'moral leaders" pronouncing this shameful massacre a "just war". Get set for a Hyman Bookbinder sighting.
