St Patrick's Festival is delighted to announce that Samantha Mumba [or should that be O'Mumba ] will be this year's Parade Grand Marshal. Perfectly encapsulating the qualities of a Grand Marshal – a hero for young people and an international Irish success story – Samantha says of her role, "I am very pleased to be asked to be Grand Marshal, it is a great honour and I am looking forward to it."

Samantha is following in the footsteps of former Grand Marshals including Mick McCarthy and Ronan Keating. Her duties include leading the parade in the traditional open top Toyota MR2 car.

Samantha has been chosen by St Patrick's Festival to feature in the event as she is such a stellar example of Irish achievement. She has transformed from Dublin's teen pop princess to an international superstar; global hits, modelling contracts, Hollywood blockbusters, stadium tours. It's been a non-stop ascent for 19 year old Samantha ever since music management legend Louis Walsh spotted her talents when she was 15. The hits started topping the charts across the world from Turkey to Japan, Russia to Australia but Samantha's biggest coup was taking the notoriously difficult US market by storm.

Samantha Mumba's [fortunately] rare cultural [sic] heritage — her mother's Irish and her father Zambian— also proved to be an irresistible allure in the States. "They love the Irish and a lot of people presumed I was American when they saw my video," says Samantha. "They don't have a black Irish pop singer so I don't think they knew what to make of it! The reaction to me was all really positive...

Irish, you say?

A Poet to his Beloved

I bring you with reverent hands The books of my numberless dreams; White woman that passion has worn  As the tide wears the dove-gray sands, And with heart more old than the horn That is brimmed from the pale fire of time: White woman with numberless dreams I bring you my passionate rhyme.

"Communists can become democrats, the rich can become poor and the poor rich, but Russians cannot become Estonians... In class and ideological conflicts, the key question is "Which side are you on?" and people can and do change sides, but in conflicts between civilizations, the question is 'What are you?' That is a given that cannot be changed." - Samuel Huntington, The Clash of Civilizations
