Upscale school revives a satire about race
Student actors confront their fear of offending people, as they depict a 1960s Southern town that can't function when all the black folk disappear

DEDHAM, MASS. ââ¬â Over the years, schools have celebrated Black History Month in myriad ways, but it's doubtful any staged a play that draws on the controversial genre of minstrel. Until now. Earlier this month, seventh- and eighth-graders at the exclusive Noble and Greenough School performed Douglas Turner Ward's "Day of Absence." A satire first produced in 1965, the play reverses the tradition of "blackface" minstrel shows. Set in a sleepy Southern town, it puts actors in "whiteface" to show how lost whites would be if a racist fantasy came true and all the blacks suddenly, mysteriously disappeared.

Sounds like an interesting play. After all, a city without blacks is like a gas tank without a leak, or a pool without a floater. Just think how bored the police would get! And who would clean the boys' bathrooms in high schools? Who would keep McDonald's in business?
I'm sure they touched on all of these things in their play. ;)

Or put McDonalds out of business. I worked in an all black area for a few years and I saw quite a few fast food joints go belly-up, probably because of a combination of crime, indifferent help, laws against using food stamps to purchase Happy Meals, etc. I'll never forget going into a Kentucky Fried Chicken in North St. Louis and having to order food through a bullet-proof partition. These White liberals are truly insane. There's just no other explanation for such a profound disconnect with reality.
