Girl Scout cookies: sweets...and more By Franco
A relative of ours just bought a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies. Those sweets are tasty -- we like the ones with the peanut butter in the middle. Yummy. But much more interesting than the cookies were the boxes that they came in.
The cookie boxes feature photos of Girl Scouts engaged in various minor activities: running, pointing, standing, etc. But what caught our attention about the boxes was the ethnicity of the Girl Scouts in the photos on the boxes: a large number of the girls/persons were Black.
Let's take a look at the racial make-up of the girls/persons. Remember that Blacks make up only about 12% of the U.S. population.
Box 1, "Do-si-dos" flavor, Side 1 photo: one Black girl only. Side 2 [reverse side] photo: the same Black girl, 2 White girls, one Black man.
Box 2, "All Abouts" flavor, Side 1: 1 Black girl, 2 White girls. Side 2: 4 Black girls, 4 White girls.
Box 3, "Aloha Chips" flavor, Side 1: 2 White girls. Side 2: 2 Black girls, 1 White girl.
Total Blacks shown on the boxes: 10 Total Whites shown on the boxes: 11
Even though Blacks make up only about 12% of the U.S. population, they make up about 50% of the population on the Girl Scout cookie boxes. And no, Virginia, we do not believe that the models in the photos were picked simply by putting names into a hat, with the photographer or GS official reaching in without looking.

Wintermute**
Do you mean the percentage of Brownies? :D
Actually I think there's probably a good reason for all those pictures of the black girls on the cookie boxes. Its probably sublimimal advertising. I remember at the blue collar place I used to work, when the girls tried to sell girl scout cookies, the guys would always something about how they really preferred brownies
(Sorry Av ;) )

Our nation has been taught that there's something immoral about too many white faces.
It's not even a matter of not enough blacks being evidence of discrimination, it's simply that whites are evil and need to be overcome in representation by people of color (isn't that colored people?).

This is even more devastating for me considering I usually buy Girl Scout cookies from a little Chinese girl that lives down the street. A boycott is called for, but it'll be tough explaining it to her when she comes around this year.
Take a stand, white man!

I can remember the days when Girl Scout cookie boxes only showed the cookies. My favorite was Thin Mints.

Girl Scouts of the USA commissioned Louis Harris and Associates to survey Girl Scouts on who they are and what they think. Nearly 1,300 Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts were surveyed in addition to an "over-sample" of 450 girls to give the pollster a perspective of Girl Scouts from various racial/ethnic groups. Harris also conducted a national survey in 1989 on the beliefs and moral values of America's children. Key findings of the Girl Scout membership poll include references to this study.
84 percent of Girl Scouts surveyed were white, 9 percent black, 2 percent American Indian/Alaskan Native 1 percent Asian. 3 percent marked other, 2 percent not sure.
