As the language here has substantially deteriorated over the last few weeks, I ask all members and senior members of good will to review the modest Forum Guidelines I have posted.

I'm not going to mount a defense of this board as I think the wide subject matter discussed here speaks for itself. I only ask that each of you show some responsibility and sense of ownership by keeping your posts and comments within the modest framework I outline. I don't think it's too much to ask, especially when you consider how the stakes are getting higher each and every day.

This is not a free speech board. I do think it is a free idea board, though. To maintain the latter I believe the guidelines must be considered and maintained. I do believe in deliberative democracy, but at the same time I won't have the site degenerate into some kind of back-alley graffiti display. I hope each of you understand and respect that.

I appreciate everyone's participation here and look forward to continued excellent commentary and debate.

Thanks and regards,

Jason

Heyah Jason/Tex,

I take your concerns seriously, but I'm not sure what you mean... Is there swearing? Is it the types of discussions (I'd guess not, since you welcome them all.) Is it the 'slurs,' the less-than-PC identifications of various groups? Is it insults directed at other members?

Sorry, but I need some MORE guidance, not less! Telling kids to 'play nice' without describing what that means can't get you what you're looking for!

I hear you, Tex, but....you have to admit that that post last night by.....I forget.....about the fellating-of--the-Jews-by-White-conservatives [how true] was really funny -- I laughed for 10 minutes. Maybe more.

The point was made -- with much humor. But I understand your position: you want to attract a good clientel to OD.

Specifically, from the guidelines:

**** No posts inciting violence towards others or links to other websites that advocate such tactics.

** Please refrain from base religious, ethnic or racial epithets and general profanity.  It is OD's ideal that sensitive issues such as religion, ethnicity and even race can be discussed on an intellectual level without undue hostilities being generated from coarse language.  **

That's pretty much it.

Thanks.

It's not about attracting 'good' clientel. I want OD to be accessible to everyone.

To me it is about moderating the environment where discussion can be achieved. Granted, I have my own ideas about what that entails and the guidelines reflect that. I think we've had pretty good success so far.

Tex - does this mean you are going to frown upon such generically useful terms such as honky, cracker, limey, yank, gringo, kraut, frog, wop, dago, jock, taffy and mick? Dear me, where will this end?

We should be told where the boundaries of good taste lie!

I tell you what, if some disruptor like '2pac4ever' or 'SomeAmishGuy' comes on board and starts using those terms in a derisive manner, you can be sure it will be addressed.

We should be told where the boundaries of good taste lie!

This isn't a Frankfurt School seminar on deconstruction. As 99% of us here are English-speaking Americans, Canadians or Englishmen, I think what constitutes 'good taste' should be a matter of assumed heritage.

Why can't it be? After all Walter Benjamin wrote that language itself is merely a conglomeration of false "names" foisted upon society by its oppressors, and warned us against "logocentrism," the bourgeois over-reliance on words.

If words by their nature are oppressive, how can we avoid giving offense? We are all ethnocentric, phallocentric, logocentric white males (except for you AV) around here.

There is only one way. Instead of mean nasty words, The higher power of LOVE.

I say instead of your arbitary criteria, bring back the Miss Bushie   test.

There is only one way. Instead of mean nasty words, The higher power of LOVE. Thank you darlin' -- but AS the only "ethnocentric, phallocentric, logocentric white" woman (OOPS! Did I just admit that?! :P ) I find words to be MOST important! If my man does NOT regularly verbally remind me that he loves me, I SULK!!

So, the higher power of LOVE REQUIRES words.

Hugs and kisses to you, though!
