House Resolution 50 By: Representatives Wix of the 33rd, Post 1 and Teper of the 42nd, Post 1

A RESOLUTION

Urging national support for the State of Israel and declaring the support of the State of Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Jewish people have had over 4,000 years of continuity in their ancestral homeland and have been subjected to unspeakable horrors of terror by others throughout their history; and

WHEREAS, the Holocaust of the Nazi terror regime, when over six million Jewish people were killed only because of their beliefs, demonstrated the need for a state for safe haven for Jews; and

WHEREAS, for more than five decades since the legal establishment of the State of Israel, its people have been subjected to continual terrorist activities and wars by its neighbors; and

WHEREAS, it is the moral right and duty for any legally established nation to protect its people and its existence as Israel has done and continues to do; and

WHEREAS, in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States of America on September 11, 2001, the United States, Georgia, and Israel now are committed to the same fight against world wide terrorism that threatens to destroy all of our civilization; and

WHEREAS, even though in 1967 all of the West Bank, half of Jerusalem, and all of the cities contained in the lands thereof were under the complete control of the Arabs, the Arabs, without provocation, still attacked Israel with the stated purpose being the complete and total elimination of the State of Israel; and

WHEREAS, the actions of Yasser Arafat and those who he supports and harbors intentionally target civilians of Israel to be killed, which is the definition of terrorism, thus making all those who pursue these actions terrorists; and

WHEREAS, the actions of the State of Israel have been only to hunt down and bring to justice the terrorists and those who support and harbor terrorism in order to protect the citizens of the State of Israel which is the first duty of any sovereign, peaceful state in the world; and

WHEREAS, Israel has consistently pursued these goals with the stated goal of not harming innocent civilians in any way, therefore making their actions legally defensive rather than terrorist; and

WHEREAS, Israel is doing nothing more than the United States' actions to hunt down and bring to justice the terrorists and the terrorist organizations involved in the terrorist acts against innocent civilians in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001; and

WHEREAS, the people of Georgia, along with all Americans, grieve the senseless loss of innocent lives due to such infamous acts of terror and evil throughout our world; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia claims many of her native men and women serving in combat in the war against terror at this time; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia stands to be recognized as being of unequivocal support for the State of Israel in its dire need to maintain its existence as a country and a democracy at this time.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body support the State of Israel and its relentless battle against terrorism and for all people suffering at the hands of terrorism and realize that animosity stems against Israel for being representative of western democratic values and urge President George W. Bush and the governors of all of the states of the United States of America to remain steadfast in support of the State of Israel and for all who battle and are victims of senseless acts of evil and all forms of terrorism at this critical time, not only as a continuing act of justice, but also as a continuing and integral statement of principles for which we, as Americans and Georgians, are now actively waging war.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the President of the United States, the Georgia delegation to the United States Congress, the governors of all of the states of the United States of America, and to the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., for transmission to all of the proper authorities in the State of Israel.**

WHEREAS, the *Holocaust of the Nazi terror regime, when over six million Jewish people were killed only because of their beliefs, demonstrated the need for a state for safe haven for Jews;** *

So what’s all that old news got to do with the present price of cotton? Georgia, erstwhile home of three Signers of the Declaration of Independence--and Rhett Butler, publicly urges national support for the State of Israel and declares the support of the State of Georgia. Why? Who asked them?

Wonder if this act of public obeisance is unique to Georgia or if every State will be issuing equally surreal Israel Uber Alles resolutions as we count down to the it’s-good-for-the-economy Iraq holocaust?

Meanwhile, the governor is trying to figure out a way to keep the folks who elected him from voting on their flag. You know, the offensive one. I thought the two simultaneous chutzpah flexings noteworthy.

Perdue prefers public vote on current flag

By JIM GALLOWAY The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Gov. Sonny Perdue on Monday said he favors a yes-or-no vote on the current Georgia flag, and would not include the old state flag with the Confederate battle emblem as a choice in any referendum.

"I think we ought to have an up-and-down vote on the current flag," the governor told a late-night WSB radio call-in program hosted by Royal Marshall.

Erin O'Brien, a spokeswoman for Perdue, confirmed the governor's remarks. But she said the governor would reveal more of his plan later this week, parts of which might assuage supporters of the old flag and its Rebel cross.

"This isn't the whole story," O'Brien said.

The referendum, if it passes the Legislature, would be a nonbinding one. The Legislature would remain the final authority on the matter. The governor said nothing of when the referendum would be held, but Democrats prefer November 2004.

The decision not to include the old state flag is sure to please Georgia business interests, which feared the racial division that might follow an extended debate over symbols of Southern heritage.

Likewise, the Perdue administration was under pressure from national Republicans, who oppose putting the Confederate battle emblem up for a statewide vote, lest it bleed into the 2004 presidential contest.

But those who spent much of last year campaigning against Gov. Roy Barnes because he changed the flag expressed disappointment. "That seems like a delaying tactic to me," said Dan Coleman, spokesman for the Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

"If that's what [the referendum] does, so be it. We'll just vote the current flag out," said Charles Lunsford, president of the Heritage Preservation Association.
