Bill would create citizens border patrol
Mike Sunnucks The Business Journal
Republican state legislators want to create a citizens corps to patrol Mexican border areas and help stem the tide of illegal immigration and drug trafficking and assist in homeland security efforts.
A bill has been put forward by a group that includes House Speaker Jake Flake and Majority Whip Randy Graf to create the Arizona Border Area Reserves. The volunteer reserves would be organized and overseen by the Department of Public Safety.
The corps would monitor and report on illegal immigration and other public safety issues along the Mexican border. The group would not have police powers or receive compensation. They would be allowed to carry firearms as allowed under current state law, but would only be able to discharge them in self-defense.
The Mexican border has become a huge issue. Tougher security at busy border crossings in Texas and California has sent illegal aliens and drug traffickers to Arizona. That has strained police and hospital resources in Southern Arizona. Hospital emergency rooms are required by federal law to treat indigent illegal immigrants.
Vigilante groups have popped up near the border and numerous illegal immigrants have died in the scorching and dangerous Arizona desert.
