Whose says listening to talk radio is a complete waste of time?

When I first heard of this site I thought the person talking about it was kidding. Note that most of the victims were White.

More history rescued from the memory hole of political correctness.

Sertorius,

What program were you listening to?

Note that most of the victims were White. And most of them had it coming.

From what I've read here and elsewhere, I think an argument can be made that blacks were underrepresented in the lynching statistics. With a few exceptions lynching was, imo, a rough and, as has been pointed out by N.B. Forrest, very effective, form of frontier justice.

Faust,

I agree. These are not nice people. My reason for noting that was because whenever lynching is brought up today about blacks, ect., rarely are the specific reasons gone into as the Look article that Eric posted shows. Instead, it is always assume to be racial.

The show was Phil Hendrie`s.

Faust, according to your link blacks made up about 72-73% of the lynching victims from 1883 to 1968. Blacks, about 12-13% of the population, routinely commit more than 50 percent of the murders in the US, so I don't think those numbers, particularly in the south with its large black populations, are that much out of line. It's time to put this White-bashing myth to rest.

In more primative times, lynching was a common form of justice, even against white people. In fact, the number of whites lynched in American history vastly outnumbers the number of blacks lynched. And, lynching isn't at all as bad as the murders we see today. The victim of a lynching was believed to be a criminal, often a murderer or rapist. While today blacks kill a great number of purely innocent whites every year.

I was watching "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and the obligatory Klan scene came up. In the middle of a cross-burning meeting, they were going to hang the most prominent black character- for being black, apparently.

I pointed out, to the displeasure of my company, that lynchings usually happened after some kind of serious crime, and not usually at the formal meetings of the Klan. Simple common sense can back that up.

And they didn't hang people on a lark- not %99 of the time anyhow.

I also find it hard to believe that during the lynching years most of those hung were innocent- given that in more recent years our 'brothers' have developed quite a taste for rape and murder.

At the very least, lives were saved by maintaining a system of retribution operating within the time-frame of most criminal minds. (I' reminded of a cop quoted on NPR, asked if street criminals pre-meditate their crimes "Dese guys don't plan past lunch...")

Spontaneous justice, without "state" action.
