Lott's Gripe
If Trent Lott's taped endorsement of the 1948 Dixiecrat presidential ticket, capping a two-decade record of veiled pro-segregationism, weren't enough to justify his removal as Senate Republican leader, his erratic behavior during the crisis should still the doubters. First, there was his soft side: the ever-more florid apologies, culminating with his declaration on Black Entertainment Television that he had become a supporter of sweeping affirmative action. Then there was the nasty side: a reported threat to his fellow Republicans that if forced out he would take the party down with him by resigning his Senate seat, allowing his state's Democratic governor to name a replacement, in the process likely returning the Senate to 50-50 parity. Then, suddenly, he was gone.
Now come the recriminations. Forget the apologies, he says: I didn't do anything wrong. "A lot of people in Washington have been trying to nail me for a long time," Lott said in an interview published this week. "When you're from Mississippi and you're a conservative and you're a Christian, there are a lot of people that don't like that. I fell into their trap and so I have only myself to blame."
For the record, many of his strongest opponents were themselves conservatives. They represented the honorable tradition of Republicanism, wary of government activism but no less committed to human decency. They rose up to insist that Lott and his ilk don't embody the GOP any more than Cynthia McKinney and her ilk embody the Democratic Party.
In the end it was decent Republicans who pushed Lott out, not to undermine conservatism but to save it. This was a coup against racism, not against conservatism. Nor, for that matter, Christianity.
And for the record, we resent the implication. Please address letters to the editor to letters@forward.com.

Thanks, F. This is good focus. This is the first I've tapped into The Forward. I am going to wade in with a letter to them in re this dump. What is "racism"? "Christianity"? -- to him/them, I mean. I know what it really is.
Clear up a question or two with you, or anybody on OD, though.?
-What happened to Trent Lott was a result of the fundamental incompatability of neocon Republican Party-ism (I hesitate to say "Republicanism" on this board, so I'll just refer to the group-psychotic entity that has inherited its name) ...and American conservatism. The Forward does not represent American conservatism, any more than today's RepublicanPartyism represents republicanism as a philosophy of government.
-Lott was a walk-the-plank victim of vicious neocon inner circle purge, replacing Southern White Protestant Confederate ilk with hi-tech bio-pharmaceutical DOCKTOR FRIST FIRST! Somebody's got to get the Senate Duma vote together to authorize sending the US MARINES into the vaccination clinics, to protect the rights of cloned Raelians to get their shots, right? The rumor among the DEAD SKUNK gangs in south Beaumont is that anti-abortionist right-wing jews and defrocked priests are holed up in there,
and they are p*ed. Meanwhile, Al-Jazeera is going wild. "THE FKING AMERICAN JEWS ARE IN THERE CLONING THEMSELVES!" Arab headlines scream. Dr. Fists firm hand, not Trent's limpwrist approach, is needed now, and that is why the US Senate got a new leader this year.
Lott was replaced, and anything he may have tried to stand for, positively, has been so twisted, spun, turned and used against him -- and us: I am sure as hell of his "ilk" if that means white southern Protestant Confederate heritate believer in the original (pre-Civil War) American idea. His ancestors belonged to that very much, not that anyone would approve of all that was done.
And it was not just an idea. As I keep pointing out to all "Leftists", it was an actual spirit, as well. But no one in the Catholic-Jewish controlled media and government want "go there", as they say. Better to sit theSesame Street young 'uns down in front of Roger Ailles' "GOD SQUAD" duo. Its time for Scorsese's Gangs of New York multiculturalists (the ENRON/IRON CROSS partial birth substitutes to a quickly-killed authentic multiculturalism unleashed by the Vietnam war protestors in the 60's) to fan out across the country and get out the word that vaccination is needed now. Preventive medicine against bio-terrorist attack, you know. There's nothing like the promise of a cure for cancer to put you over the top. Nixon knew that. He made it a personal war. Imagine! Government declaring war on a disease!
Wonder who thought that one up. Well, as they say on the ward floor, nothing hooks you like the Big C, for which there is, thankfully, chemotherapy.
I predict we will see the FDNY flanking Guilian at a White House lawn
podium, giving directions to local municiple authorities about how to handle social break-downs, and deal with the federal reps it will be necessary for local health and other authorities to laison with, in coping with the new national emergency. Pataki hosted (or hoisted) by Schumer, reassuring his constituents, and the nation, that every thing is under control -- wearing a smiley-face lapel button.
And where is Senator Clinton? -- perhaps a SWPC (Southern White Protestant Confederate) voice -- HEY!--remember Goldwater?; or a cromagnon Liberal, anti-Vietnam war voice -- Hey! remember RFK? -- or, now, even a left-wing McPhereson Ivy League academic voices -- WILL SHE NOT COME OUT OF THE NEOCON SHADOW-ORBIT, AND STAND UP FOR OLD AMERICA AGAINST BUSH? --Thats not a hope, anymore than this is a real coalition; just a wish for sometiing. New York is definitely the state in which the tensions I write about are greatest, though, and she is positioned politically on the razors edge of many, many swirling claims that will have to be mediated, somehow. It was disappointing to hear her speak of the Republicans as "cleansing" themselves with Lott's dismissal. She could have reached out. (not that that that would have helped; but look what he did.)
