ROME (AP) - Italian authorities carried out a sweep against illegal immigrants, deporting 1,324 people as part of an ongoing crackdown, the government said Wednesday.

Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said the latest stage of the government's "Free Streets" operation began Nov. 12.

The government sent the immigrants home on seven charter flights, with three planes going to Romania, and one each to Albania, Egypt, Nigeria and Sri Lanka.

The operation shows "the will of the government to work with the greatest rigor against human trafficking, clandestine immigration and connected criminal activities," Pisanu said in a statement.

Authorities have arrested and repatriated several thousand illegal immigrants as part of the program, which began deportations in August.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi's conservative coalition was elected in May 2001 on a promise to crack down on organized crime and illegal immigration. Many in his center-right coalition link crime to immigrants from such areas as Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

This is more silver lining to the dark cloud of this "War on Terror".

As this "War on Terror" morphs into a "Clash of Civilizations", we'll have even more of this sort of sanity breaking out all over the place.

If the "Clash of Civilizations" lasts long enough, our people might finally wake up to the fact that it was really a "Race War" from the very beginning. Then our racial, territorial and economic bacon might actually be saved.

Wouldn't that be nice?

**Premier Silvio Berlusconi's conservative coalition was elected in May 2001 on a promise to crack down on organized crime and illegal immigration. **

Let's see. Cracking down on organized crime and illegal immigration as a campaign platform. If Tom Tancredo would just renounce NAFTA & GATT and support tariffs he could run on the same platform in 04.
