An outstanding site on the father of theistic existentialism.

Its great to find someone interested in philosophy. I spent 40 years teaching it, and would again, but the time comes when one must leave aside thinking with words and go to reality. Philosophers hate to hear that (I know I did!) but its true.
Its not true that "existence precedes essence." We are already genetic beings, with a history of 9 months in increasingly crowded womb conditions until the COSMIC BATTLE FOR BIRTH! -- which are what wars are replays of, at the group level. (cf. Psychohistory -- key word, most recent major contribution to science) before we get here; and, instinctual (eros and thanatos) beings subject to repression afterwards. Sartre didn't know. The European culture philosophers (as opposed to the technical ones following Wittgenstein, Carnap, G. Bergmann (my favorite positivist)) were too heavily influenced by WWII and the Cath-O-Jew complex to take seriously when they talk about "the human condition" and so forth. They were just trying to get sane, where we actually started from as a nation without a past.
What Sartre writes about is the discovery of "BE HERE NOW", which, as an experience, is "re-birth". This expereince is key to Protestant, as opposed to the Catholic and Jewish religion centered on blood idolatry. It is what is meant in Hegelian terms by "spirit". What is in the blood, not what the blood is itself (I've explained that here). It is an idea so big it knocked Georg Frederick Wilhelm Hegel out of the box so no one can put together what he said, exactly. But there's no Christ in it. Nor in Sarte's model of consciousness. In it, you can never catch up to what you are.
Note: "Christ" is the name given the risen part -- the body is no better than any common criminal's. "New", "Original", "To be me!" is the idea America was founded on, which is why no frocks, collars, yarmulkas or other ostentatious shows of inner life were to be found on this continent until these two old-world, off-shore entites landed en masse. That's why you knew the phrases "NEW WAR!" "NEW AMERICA" etc. was a Catholic/Jewish propoganda design; it reverses what they are. They have stolen our grammar. Its called soul rape. The beady eyed bastards who put little boy blue in the White House to blow his horn have announced that these two non-American entities are the target swing voters of '04. The United Soviet Catholic States of America and Israel. USCSA&I. knessetology replaces political science at the U.

wombatnine,
Having been educated within the Thomastic tradition, no doubt the inability to accept the message that Paul preached has caused, many Catholics intense sorrow. While I value the example of self restraint, the freedom to choose still is essential to be human.

AntiYuppie,
During the 60's many thought of me as a Hippie, just because my hair was longer than those who were parents. That era was about individual experience. Freedom of choice and questioning of all accepted tradition was at the core of many within my generation. My view is that Existentialism is a process more than a set of rules.
Methods of inquiry must conform to the tools of our intellect and how it functions to perceive consciousness. Kant and Hegal seek to formulate a system of understanding than some will say, is only understood by themselves. Hegalââ¬â¢s chief contribution to Existentialism is that when you read him you want to consider Camusââ¬â¢ question on suicide!
Too many people want to intellectualize definitions, and are frustrated when simple distinction are not made or are not clear.
The two central branches (at least to my viewpoint) are those Existentialist that are atheists/agnostics and those who are Jud-Christian (most believers happen to be in the Western tradition). An example like Woody Allen may express Existential confusion in his movies and anyone who views his work will get an insight that doubt, insecurity and frustration are constant themes.
For centuries, Aristotle was the prevailing view, and Aquinas applied the Christian spin. When you get into the period when Darwinian theories become widely accepted you enter into the abyss of ââ¬Årelativismââ¬Â. While may non-believing Existentialists accept evolution without much scrutiny, others may question the replacement cosmology that the secularist have substituted as their new god.
Yes there are psychologists, see the Existentialism Page on BATR.
As a very general starting point many Existentialist want to free themselves from all past philosophies and develop their own theories. For me, this is foolish, since the essential questions always reverts back to the existence of a First Cause. How one answers that is based more on belief than rational proof. Limits of mankind to understand what are now mysteries of the universe, is very difficult for the rigid thinker to accept. They want to built their system upon empirical evidence that will supply all the answers.
Obviously, as you know from my writings, I seldom offer any answers. The reason is simple, because man is unable to save his own sanity based upon his understand of the self, his place within the universe and those forces that keep it all going. The asylum that is called earth is a prison for people who sincerely reflect upon the human condition and honestly admit how little they know and understand. Not because of this uncertainty but because there are so many who have none . . . Those who MUST accept that rationality is the solution, are the true prevaders of mental illness.
Give a read to the few essays on our Existentialism page. Donââ¬â¢t suggest that answers are within the articles, but there may be a small insight that may better explain the process.
