JDL's Irv Rubin Brain Dead After Suicide Attempt

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Jewish Defense League Chairman Irv Rubin, jailed for allegedly plotting to bomb a mosque and the offices of a Arab-American congressman, was left brain dead and on life support on Monday after slitting his throat in a suicide attempt.
"He is on life support and his prognosis is dire," Rubin's attorney, Bryan Altman, told Reuters. "He is brain dead. I don't know if there is any indication that that can change in a positive way."
Rubin, 57, had been taken from his cell at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles at about 5 a.m. PST (8 a.m. EST) on Monday when he slashed his throat with a razor blade and then jumped or fell over a railing.
He was rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and underwent surgery for wounds to his neck and throat and severe head injuries from the fall but did not regain consciousness, U.S. Marshal's spokesman William Woolsey said.
The fiery, controversial Rubin, who emigrated to the United States from Canada in 1961 and has been national chairman of the JDL since 1985, was arrested in December and charged along with another member, Earl Krugel, with the bomb plot on the testimony of an undercover informant.
Prosecutors say that Rubin and Krugel conspired with the informant to plant bombs at the King Fahd Mosque in the Los Angeles suburb of Culver City and an office of Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican of Lebanese Christian descent.
The indictment against Rubin alleged that Krugel, a dental hygienist, planned to build a bomb in his own garage and that the informant was to carry out a bombing the next day. Rubin allegedly approved the bombing plans and selected the targets.
Rubin and Krugel were charged with conspiracy, conspiracy to use a destructive device, attempted arson, attempted arson of a federal facility, possession of a destructive device and solicitation to commit a crime of violence.
FACING LIFE IN PRISON
Both men, who pleaded innocent, faced a maximum punishment of life in prison if convicted. They were due in court on Monday for a status conference in the case.
"I was informed that Irv tried to slit his throat with a razor blade he obtained and then jumped over a railing and landed 20 feet below on a cement floor," Krugel's attorney Mark Werksman said.
"He's been despondent for months and the pressure of the upcoming trial weighed heavily on him," Werksman said. "He's been deteriorating for some time and the pressure of the Monday court appearance may have pushed him over the top."
Defense lawyers said the JDL has been a target of FBI investigations for more than 15 years. The December arrests of the two men came amid heightened tensions following the Sept. 11 attacks on Washington and New York City, they said.
Rubin, who is married with two sons, assumed leadership of the militant Jewish group in 1985 from its controversial founder, Rabbi Meir Kahane, who moved to Israel to form a political movement. Kahane was assassinated in 1990 in New York.
Rubin, long a thorn in the side of mainstream Jewish groups, often challenged what he said was their willingness to "turn the other cheek," preferring a more combative approach that included praising an Israeli settler who turned his gun on people praying in a mosque in a killing spree.
In 1978, Rubin was charged with soliciting murder after he held a press conference to protest a march in Skokie, Illinois, by the American Nazi Party and offered to pay anyone who killed or maimed a Nazi. He was ultimately cleared.
Authorities also investigated the JDL in connection with the 1985 murder of Arab-American activist Alex Odeh, which has never been solved. Rubin said at the time that Odeh had gotten "exactly what he deserved."
Though the JDL has become marginalized in recent years and membership has dwindled, Rubin has been a loud and familiar presence at protests -- turning up almost daily at the murder trial of O.J. Simpson to spar with the former football star's supporters -- and took pride in his more than 40 arrests.
In September, he won from behind bars a ruling by a California appeals court that barred officials in suburban Burbank from invoking Jesus Christ at public meetings.

My thoughts exactly, Ragnar.
You should have heard the way the story was presented out here in L.A., on the local newsradio station (KFWB). It was set up in such a way as to try and derive sympathy for Rubin. Sympathy for the devil you might say. The story went on and on with an overlong soundbite from friends etc., explaining Rubin's "depression", how he had "... lost weight, felt hopeless, betrayed," etc. To keep from throwing up was quite a feat.

I don't, myself, believe it. The "brain dead" part of it, that is. This smells like an after-the-fact variation on a Sicilian mafioso showing up for his murder trial in a mobile oxygen tent, or wearing a ratty housecoat and feeding imaginary birds in the courtroom. Ie, a stunt to get him out.
If, however, this story is accurate....who's to say he hadn't previously agreed to a deal in which he was to implicate other members of the Jewish Crime Syndicate in exchange for some form of leniency, and pulled a last-minute "Frankie Pentangeli"?
I'd be interested in seeing what visitors Irv may have had in the 3 or 4 days prior to his three-quarter Dutch Act.

It's interesting that Irv Rubin gets all this media attention when sophisticated Jewish crime lords are always glossed over in the media. Often Jewish crime bosses are described as "Russian" instead of Jewish.
I think that the JDL was always considered an embarrassment to all the other more mainstream Jewish groups and they are all glad to seem him gone.

I too oppose this. In fact neither Iraq not Iran should be attacked at all; instead the caption should read "Attack North Korea the Day Pakistan War Ends'. We're being dumb, Pakistan is the real satanic enemy. They must be attacked, not just conventionally, but with thermonuclear weapons. Total annihilation should be the aim.
After Pakistan & North Korea are eliminated, nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles should immediately be supplied to Vietnam and Taiwan, under the control of US forces based in those countries. Just as we deployed these weapons in Western Europe during the cold war. Complete embargo of trade with China. Isolate them and force them into starvation!! Pull all investment out !!

Back on "Free" Republic, our good friend Cachelot (HBendor) is screaming "blood libel" again...what else is new? This time, he is pushing a bizarre conspiracy theory in which the Senator Rubin's boys targetted for assassination is responsible for Rubin's "murder." It's amazing how JR coddles people who openly support Irv Rubin and the JDL. That the JDL is an openly violent terrorist organization is a matter of common knowledge, yet according to Robinson, open celebration of the JDL's blatant Jewish Supremacist views and goals is perfectly acceptable. How long would an enthusiast for terror in the name of Islam (or, worse yet, dreaded "white supremacism") last? Or, to make the comparison even more striking, notice that while support for Zionist terror is perfectly acceptable, even the most tame defense of white nationalism (VDARE, AmRen, etc) is considered beyond the pale on that forum of frauds and hypocrites.

Another interesting aspect to FR's praise for JTF/JDO/JDL is the fact that the JTF in particular is virulently "racist." Take a look at their website and you'll note that they describe negroes and other coloreds in terms that would make most Klansmen blush.
They have a cable access TV show in Manhattan and Queens New York City where they call blacks, "schvartzes" and animals etc. Which is what they really think of all goyim.
You are right, White, gentile "racism" is evil and rotten but Jewish Supremacism fits right in on Free Republik. Waving the Israeli flag on the 35th anniversary of the Liberty then allowing convicted terrorists' websites and articles to be posted on his website and praise for them, well you don't need to be very astute to figure out JR.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jewish Defense League leader Irv Rubin, who made a career out of confronting those he considers enemies of Israel and the Jewish people, died in a hospital after attempting to commit suicide in jail last week, authorities said. He was 57.
Rubin had been in a medically induced coma since Nov. 4 but died at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, said Adelaida De La Cerda, a spokeswoman at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. No other details were immediately available.
Federal officials said Rubin slashed his neck with a prison-issued razor blade on Nov. 4 and tumbled 18 feet over a railing at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center.
The apparent suicide attempt occurred just hours before Rubin was to make a court appearance on charges he allegedly plotted to bomb a Southern California mosque and the office of Rep. Darrell E. Issa, R-Calif., who is the grandson of Lebanese immigrants. Fellow JDL member Earl Krugel was also arrested in connection with the alleged scheme.
His wife, Shelley Rubin, has called for a further investigation in the suicide attempt, believing Rubin would not try and kill himself.
But authorities said interviews with witnesses ââ¬â including officers and inmates ââ¬â left no doubt about the cause of Rubin's injuries.
Rubin and Krugel were arrested Dec. 11 after an FBI (news - web sites) informant delivered an explosive powder that authorities believed was the last component in making pipe bombs for the alleged targets ââ¬â the King Fahd mosque in suburban Culver City and Issa's office. The charges carry up to 40 years in prison if Krugel is convicted.
Rubin, who by his own account has been arrested more than 40 times, joined the JDL early in the 1970s and quickly moved up, becoming chairman in 1985.
In 1989, the leader of the rival Jewish Defense Organization was charged with firing shots at Rubin and wounding three others in New York. Mordechai Levy was convicted of assault.
Rubin offered insight into his militant roots in a biography posted on the JDL's Web site.
As a boy growing up in Montreal, he encountered signs declaring "No dogs or Jews Allowed," posted outside of hotels and other businesses. He also endured taunts from French Canadian school children who teased him because he was Jewish.
"It was here that Irv Rubin learned to fight back," the biography states.
His family emigrated in 1961 and he became a U.S. citizen and joined the Air Force in 1966, serving four years.
In 1973, he served in Israel's civil defense corps during the Yom Kippur War.
The JDL, whose symbol is a raised fist inside a Star of David, has the motto "Never Again," referring to the World War II murder of 6 million Jews. It was founded in 1968 by Meir Kahane to mount armed response to anti-Semitic acts in New York City.
The group was suspected in a 1985 bombing in Santa Ana that killed Southern California Arab anti-discrimination leader Alex Odeh, but no arrests were ever made.
Rubin was fiercely passionate about his religion and background and was critical of the stalled Middle East peace process, which he called "suicide" in 1995.
Rubin could often be found protesting outside courthouses where white supremacists were being tried or even clashing with Ku Klux Klan members on "The Jerry (news - web sites) Springer Show."
He once offered $500 to anyone who "kills, maims or seriously injures" a member of the American Nazi Party, and last year, he urged Jews across the country to arm themselves in the face of violence against minorities. Reunioneers, this forum does not censor as to content, as long as basic civility is maintained. So, you all may post about and discuss FR as you wish, but my recent bizarre encounter with Jim Rob today has led me to a personal epiphany of sorts:
I will no longer waste my time obsessing about Jim Rob and/or FR.
Why, you ask? Because I have come to the conclusion that FR is a lost cause and is not worth my energy or attention, because nothing I do or say will change it back to the way it was. It's just not going to happen.
So, I am through with Jim Rob and FR and am moving on. We have a great forum here and much of the magic or the old FR we can recapture here. My energies will be focused on that, and nothing else. I still wish Jim Rob and FR well, but I am done with him and it.
The rest of you may post what you like, but my focus will not be on Jim Rob and FR anymore. They simply aren't worth the effort.

Does anyone else detect a new and refreshing liberality in Jim Rob's governance lately? After all, he mercifully restored Harry's posting privileges; He let the "10 Commandments" thread stand; And I hear tell he's actually allowed a VDARE-sourced thread to stand today.
Say, you don't suppose Jim Rob is beginning to revert back to his old self?
If so, maybe Reunion's watchful eye and critical voice can take some of the credit.
Here's hoping these positive trends continue.

Now, suppose my wildest dreams come true and FR reforms itself completely on the Reunion model. Suppose it adopts an open regime of forum adjudication with clear rules that foster a truly free speech environment as I have tried to do here, and then welcomes back the FReeper diaspora with the promise that no single conservative faction will ever be favored again with the power to purge or bully any other into submission and/or silence. Would I go back? You betcha. Does that mean that I would shut this place down? Not a chance. I am committed to this place for as long as FReepers/Reunioneers are. If you all find a value in it, then so do I. It's not an either/or proposition. It's strictly both/and in that case.
Not that I think the dream scenario is all that likely. I'm not that naive. I doubt that it will ever happen. And even if it does happen, I may not get an invite. LOL. My last exchange with Jim Rob was not at all friendly. So, I'm certainly not holding my breath.
But worry not. I am not going to be coopted or compromised by FR in any case. I've really washed my hands of the place as it is. And, you know what? We are having so much fun here that even under the dream scenario I'd probably still not spend all that much time there. After all, this place is a HOOT! Don't you agree? And when the host refuses, he is blamed by all sides, accused of being allied with each faction's enemy, and everyone begins to leave the forum in droves, nursing hurt feelings and, perversely, imputing to THE HOST the most offending uncensored speech of their not-yet-censored opponents.
So, the host is left with this Hobbesian choice. Either:
A) Remain neutral and true to free speech principles and watch the forum die (because, really, when it comes right down to it, few it seems -- even among the staunchest, most liberty-loving conservatives -- have the intestinal fortitude or ego-strength to participate in a genuinely free speech forum), or
B) Become the censorious speech-killing trump card for the dominant faction, winning at least their love and loyalty and, thus, making the forum of the kind somebody wants to support while still alienating the affections of all the rest.
Perhaps this is the choice you faced, Jim, back in the fall. Perhaps this is why you had to sacrifice me and my Brigadiers to appease the Bushbots. You had to do it to save the forum, because, when it comes right down to it, few have the stomach required to participate in a truly free speech forum.
I understand better now. You had to do what you had to do. You were placed in an impossible situation, much as I am today.
So, what shall I do? I am resolved to let this forum die rather than become the uber censor for any given faction. Or, in the alternative, I just might give up my hosting duties to others and let them at least make of it what somebody wants, because few seem to really want or appreciate the kind of raucous wide-open free speech forum I want.
The bottom line: Regardless of one's high ideals and principles, only products that people actually want succeed. And if folks really can't stand contending with their political opposition, and if folks really can't tolerate their opponent's speech, then I guess you have to give them a forum where they are protected from same, or the forum will fail, as this one apparently is and yours is not. The market ultimately decides what principles can long stand. So, I really can't blame you at all for yielding to the demands of the market. You had to do what you had to do.
So, having failed to appreciate the pressures you had to contend with as host which no doubt led you to do what you did, I apologize for the vociferousness and unyieldedness of my dissent. It is better that FR survive in a some form than fail because it is dedicated to principles which most really don't give a damn about and whose upholding they more often then not just end up personally resenting anyway.
I have noticed that FR is actually allowing Bush criticism these days. That makes me pine to be a part of it again. Might we just let bygones be bygones and start over? If you would permit me, I would like to return to FR with a new name. "Arator" probably has too much baggage attached to it given our tumultuous history. It's probably better to let "Arator" just fade away into the mists of FReeper history. But, whether it be with new name or not, I will abide by whatever you wish in this and all other regards.
I have been chastened and humbled by my hosting experience here at Reunion. It is a much, much harder job than I ever imagined. As such, I really can no longer fault you for anything you have done. You had to do what you had to do to keep your forum thriving. Who am I to criticize? Your forum continues. Mine is dying. The market is the final judge.

Arator as usual in the presence of Freeper management spending most of his time on his knees. Do you think Diotoma could verify that's his modus operendi? (Or maybe that's just the only thing he's good at) ;)
