[I]The normal nothing-interesting-ever-happens-here monotony of provincial New Zealand was briefly interrupted yesterday by an armed seige in downtown Palmerston North (I was one of the privelaged many bystanders who got to see it :afro:, as it happens, although I foolishly left before the climax).

A guy held up a shop with a 280-pound crossbow for about 2 hours before the Armed Offenders Squad (the NZ equivalent of SWAT) lobbed teargas and stun-grenades into the building. What was alarming was that the building spontaneously burst into fire shortly afterwards, which reminded me of the footage from "Waco: Rules of Engagement" (which I have seen dismissed as a hoax, can anyone confirm this?)

Is it possible for teargas to spontaneously ignite? Does the combination of teargas and stun-grenades usually lead to fire? I'm almost 100% positive that the fire was NOT lit by the sole occupant of the building, who was dragged out the rear of the building shortly after the AOS stormed in.

The story doesn't seem to be on the web yet, here's a couple of photos I scanned off the front page of the local newspaper:

That does look a bit like Waco. I don't know about teargas leading to explosions...

I found this here:

After years of denial, the FBI has admitted to using pyrotechnic (or "incendiary") tear gas in the 1993 Federal assault on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. What is pyrotechnic tear gas and why is it controversial?

A guy held up a shop with a 280-pound crossbow for about 2 hours before the Armed Offenders Squad (the NZ equivalent of SWAT) lobbed teargas and stun-grenades into the building. Such a huge response for a guy with a crossbow? LOL. Looks like NZ cops are just as bad as American ones. Here they call out armored personnel carriers and helicopters whenever someone threatens someone with a nail file.

What was alarming was that the building spontaneously burst into fire shortly afterwards, which reminded me of the footage from "Waco: Rules of Engagement" (which I have seen dismissed as a hoax, can anyone confirm this?) No, that movie wasn't a hoax. All that footage you saw there was real. I understand it even won a film industry award or two.

The best part of the movie is seeing the BATF thugs getting shot and eventually dragging their dead and wounded away. The Branch Davidians had retarded religious beliefs, but I respect the hell out of their willingness to fight back against government thugs even when outnumbered and surrounded.

Perhaps the most sickening part of that movie is when you see one of the head BATF faggots testifying before Congress, pretending to get all choked up about how well-armed the BDs were. What bullsh!t! The BATF outnumbered the BDs and had body armor, MP5s, M16s, and a freakin helicopter with a machine gun mounted in it! They got their asses kicked fair and square in that initial raid and had to retreat because their idiotic "spray-n-pray" tactics caused them to run out of ammo (and got several agents shot, too).

I don't think stun grenades are likely to cause fires, though I'm not sure. Some kinds of tear gas grenades definitely can, and that's probably what happened at Waco.

Hey, don't sniff at crossbows, you can take down a deer with those things! :shocking: Actually, there have been a few incidents involving crossbows here lately (including a murder) because criminals import them to sidestep gun control regulations. The funny thing about the AOS response was that all the "boy-racers" driving their crappy hotted-up Nissans listen to the police frequencies on their scanners to avoid getting busted for speeding, so whenever there is an incident like this about 3 cop cars show up along with about 20 carloads of spectators
No, that movie wasn't a hoax. Very disturbing footage, particularly the FLIR footage of the BATF agents opening fire on women and children.
I don't think stun grenades are likely to cause fires, though I'm not sure. Some kinds of tear gas grenades definitely can, and that's probably what happened at Waco. Yeah I'm not sure exactly what caused the fire. It was quite a hot day (cloudless sky, temperature around 25-35 degrees celsius throughout the afternoon).
