It was obvious to me when reading his book "The War Is Racket" that this guy was using the basic leftist 1930s-vocabulary against "plutocrats" and all - Communist sympathies are entirely possible. Not ALL Communists back then were Jewish university students, you know.

I find it highly unlikely that a Marine Major General was a Red back in the 30's. Do any of his papers hint toward that? I don't think so, but thanks to Faust for the link in any case.

EDIT: To elaborate. To dislike Fascists does not make one a Communist. To address matters of government corruption, and to see a less federalist/plutocratic ruling cadre as a better solution is also not necessarily Communist. The logic does not work that "if you are not anti-Communist you must be Communist."

Gee, that sounds familiar, where have I heard a similar wheeze before . . . hmmmm.

Butler's bitterness at the end of his career is well documented. I am not surprised a man of his backbone took what shots he could at those he saw as having betrayed the nation he served.

Maybe Butler was a "multiculturalist puke" - oh wait, sorry: that was Tolstoy.

Angeleyes and il ragno,

Well a few points about Smedley Butler:

  1. He Lied to Congress about “Nazi” businessmen plotting coup to overthrow Roosevelt and set up a fascist government.

  2. He gave speeches to the Communist Party USA and wrote for Communist newspapers in the 1930's.

  3. Lying and starting slanderous rumors about Benito Mussolini.

  4. Roosevelt was worse war racketeer than the people Smedley Butler served under.

I have seem no evidence that “The Business Plot” or the story about Mussolini running over a child are true.

Pooints well taken, I just don't see a Marine being a Commie.
