Wis. Bans Human Cloning, Gov. Vows Veto

MADISON, Wis. -- The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature voted to ban human cloning, but Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle vowed to veto the measure.

After two days of debate, the Senate voted 21-12 Wednesday to prevent reproductive cloning, or creating babies using existing human cells. The Assembly passed the ban in June.

The legislation also would bar therapeutic cloning, which relies on the use of embryonic tissue and produces genetically identical stem cells that can develop into any other type of cell in the body. Embryos are destroyed in the process.

Wisconsin Right-To-Life, an anti-abortion group, plans a call-in campaign to persuade the governor to sign the ban, according to Barbara Lyons, the group's executive director.

Doyle contends the measure would harm stem cell research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a national leader, and deflate hopes for curing serious diseases with the new technology.

"Allowing our scientists to search for cures to the world's deadliest diseases isn't about being liberal or conservative. It's about being compassionate," the governor said in a statement.

UW-Madison chancellor John Wiley blasted the ban.

"It is a message that special interests can close off legitimate avenues of scientific inquiry," Wiley said in a statement.

Six other states -- Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and South Dakota -- have similar bans.

True. Standard diatribe on both sides. Should be a moot point, researchers just recently gained one of their greatest successes in partially curing paralysis and heart disease by using Adult Stem Cells. stem cell research
