You know, as I move through life, it occurs to me that a key to personal happiness is a good job. You spend more time there than anywhere else, so if you're not at least content there, things are generally going to suck. A big part of that is how well you get along with the people there.

What I've discovered is that you either get along with the people there, or you don't. There isn't too much in-between. And there's really no good way of knowing beforehand how you'll get along. If your boss is just an unmitigatable asshole, you gotta get out.

Rather than, say, try to tough it out, or change, or change him. It just won't work.

When you allow yourself to get sucked into the politics, which we inevitably do because we are used to making a "family" with the people we spend time with, it's time to get out. The hardest thing to overcome is the fear of change, but that's all it is fear.

One great thing about getting a new job:

It's like you have a whole new set of ties!

That is EXACTLY what I've noticed. If you can tell, right from day one, that you're not really going to get along with the people, start looking for another job that day!

Making enough money is important, of course -- especially if you have a family to support -- and no one ever complained about making too much. But I think it's definitely more important to (1) have work that you enjoy and find satisfying (at least for the most part -- all jobs can be tedious at times), and (2) have a decent boss and coworkers. If someone is stuck in a job that doesn't satisfy these two criteria, then he should keep his eyes peeled for other opportunities. The grass isn't always greener on the other side, but if it's brown and dead on your side, then you don't have much to lose.
