Thank God for the South!
I love the South, not for its advancing prosperity, its new factories, extending railways, nor its promise of great wealth in days to come. I love it for its olden story, its romantic past, its soul-stirring history, its poetry, its sentiment and its sermon. I love its old literature, its early heroes and brave defenders, its sorrow draped past. Do not tempt me to leave this dear old South. It is my home and my shrine and shall be my sepulcher. I might gain more money elsewhere, but my heart is here, by the graves of my father and kindred ones who are gone. I am bound to love the spot where my cradle stood and my fathers lie buried.
Private Benjamin Wasington Jones, Surry Light Artillary.
I heard the notes of the famous national anthems, and yet my soul was still unstirred, till suddenly, like a heavenly sunburst of glorious enlivening light, I caught the welcome notes of ââ¬ÅDixie.ââ¬Â
Then suddenly, as the lightningââ¬â¢s light Dispels the darkness of the night, My grief had fled, my cares had sped, The world was bright, my heart was light, And from my very soul I said: ââ¬ÅIââ¬â¢m glad I live in Dixie.ââ¬Â
