NewsChannel5.com (Nashville), Sept. 16 The Red Cross has been praised for its tireless efforts assisting storm victims in Middle Tennessee. But there are concerns in the black community that the organization lacks diversity, especially in an effort helping mostly black evacuees.
A number of minority churches and groups are offering to help, but say theyââ¬â¢ve been left out.
The Red Cross Shelter in Franklin opened its doors to storm victims last week. Itââ¬â¢s only one of two shelters in Middle Tennessee. The other is in Nashville.
Both shelters are in suburban areas, **and the volunteers are predominately white, while the evacuees are almost all black.**
Some members of the African-American community say thatââ¬â¢s not good enough.
ââ¬ÅWhen youââ¬â¢re different and youââ¬â¢re the lone person, you do feel different. When youââ¬â¢re in crisis you like to have some familiarity there,ââ¬Â says Joyce Searcy with the Bethlehem Centers of Nashville.
{snip}
But Reverend Enoch Fuzz says in times like this, the volunteer corps should be more diverse, ââ¬ÅWho in Brentwood would know where a black beauty shop or barber shop is?ââ¬Â asks Fuzz.
**The Red Cross acknowledges most of itââ¬â¢s volunteers are white, but says training is open to anyone.** Since then, Joyce Searcy went through training, and is signing up others.

Humanitarian volunteerism has never been characteristic of the African-American Community.

I agree, there needs to be more negros in the red cross, for at least as long as it takes to assist their resettlement in hati or the congo.

Mr. Marcus Garvey and his "Back to Africa" colleagues should have received more support from Whites...

In times of distress evil whitie is bringing in food and water and setting up shelters. In times of distress the noble negro is looting, raping and shooting at rescue workers.

I am at a loss. Is someone printing this story to point the finger at blacks for failing to sign up as Red Cross volunteers, to accuse the Red Cross of being an exclusionary organization, or because they
Don't Have Anything Legit to bitch about, and feel guilty for hating Whitey even though Whitey is opening his heart and helping as best he and she can during a tough time?
I don't get it.
Ingrate doesn't begin to describe this kind of crap.

I think it is about blacks feeling discriminated against because the Red Cross had the nerve to send white people to help them. Blacks claim discrimination at the drop of a hat but don't want the white man holding out a bottle of water in their face.
The fact that very few blacks ever join charity groups outside the ghetto is a bonus prize in this story.
So maybe white do-gooders care more about helping out these niggers than their brothers in the "african american" community. How shocking!

Since Red Cross is made up of volunteers and blacks are concerned that their numbers are not represented fully wouldn't it stand to reason that more blacks should volunteer? :wallbash:
