Burger King recalls 'sacrilegious' desserts

JOHN INNES

THE fast-food chain, Burger King, is withdrawing its ice-cream cones after the lid of the dessert offended a Muslim.

The man claimed the design resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah, and branded it sacrilegious, threatening a "jihad".

The chain is being forced to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid with backing from The Muslim Council of Britain. It apologised and said: "The design simply represents a spinning ice-cream cone."

The offending lid was spotted in a branch in Park Royal last week by business development manager Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe.

He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: "This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims."

A Muslim Council spokesman said: "We commend the sensitive and prompt action that Burger King has taken."

I am offended by his being offended. I demand that he make some sacrifice in his life to compensate me for my mental anguish.

Burger King should tell this guy to go to hell.

Other than being poorly designed from a graphics point of view I see nothing wrong with it. It only vaguely resembles the other image.

If this were a dessert to be sold in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, then I could see Burger King wanting to make sure no delicate Muslim sensibilities were offended; it would just make good business sense. In this case, however, Burger King has stopped selling a dessert completely because a single Muslim in England was offended. It's just ridiculous.
The guy is a nut.
True, but he has the backing of The Muslim Council of Britain, so he's not a lone fruitcake.

I can't think of anytime in my life, as a Christian, where I've been offended by an innocent similarity between an image and a Christian symbol. And, should it happen and should I object, I can't imagine calling for a boycott if the offender acquiesces and does away with the image.

How much less can I appreciate this man's behavior when he follows a false religion, a religion that I see no offense in offending.

I'm offended that the Muslim word for Allah resembles my icecream container! I demand that Arabic be rewritten. For it is said let it be. Besides, if Allah melts do you still have to pray five times a day?
