Attorneys give opening statements in Vang trial
Attorneys outlined their cases today in the trial of a Minnesota man accused of killing six deer hunters in northwestern Wisconsin.
Chai Soua Vang's attorney says the Hmong man felt physically threatened by a group of white hunters who tormented him with racial insults before a confrontation over trespassing exploded into gunfire.
Attorney Steve Kohn says Vang, of Saint Paul, started shooting because he believed one of the other hunters fired first.
But prosecutors say Vang fired first because he was angry the hunting group disrespected him.
Assistant Attorney General Roy Korte says Vang fired at least 20 shots, and the group of hunters had only one gun and managed to shoot just once during the confrontation in Sawyer County.
Vang is charged with six counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. He faces mandatory life in prison if convicted.
