I am one of the many poor WHITES that almost did not escape my beloved New Orleans in time. I am thankful to God that I was able to beg a ride out just before the contraflow was stopped.

I had called Amtrack and Greyhound both, over 24 hours before Katrina hit. They wanted no part of evacuation; I was connected to a recording which stated "there is no service at this time due to Hurricane Katrina". Now those companies are trumpeting their "aid." They should be sued for making deliberately misleading statements. I also tried getting a room at two French Quarter hotels, both in the center of a block and was told "we are not booking reservations and are encouraging our guests to leave." For awhile it looked as if I would be stuck in my home by the lake, and I was plenty frightened and angry. As it turns out, my neighborhood was flooded to the rooftops; I wouldn't have made it. I'm 56 years old, female, alone and suffering from non-alcoholic cirrhosis. My own government tried to kill me by malevolent neglect. See how you feel when it comes to your town.

This is not about racism, it's about lacking the means to own a private vehicle.

Blanco did what she could by asking for aid before it was needed. Nagin is either inept or complicit in this mess. The RTA (Regional Transit Authority) refused to allow its buses for evacuation claiming "we're a private company." To my mind private companies have public obligations in time of emergency and Nagin should have used that arguement with the RTA chief. Both should be made to stand trial for murder.

The culpable players must be brought to justice, no excuses, and given no quarter...
