There's even an international scientific unit named after him: the Tesla. It's a unit of magnetic flux density.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia: Tesla was close friends with Mark Twain.

You are right. Also I think many people think of him as a lunatic who tried to build death ray gun and weather control machines. It is odd in the case of Tesla must people focus on his research that did not produce much in the way of useful technology. But I guess many people find death rays and weather control more interesting than AC technology, transformers, hydroelectric/steam turbines, electric motors, and radio technology.

I think he was quite the visionary. When those two items have been created I hope he gets the credit.
