Ceramics bullets?

I was wonder about the idea of Ceramics bullets with nylon jacket. Alos one drill out the tip of a bullet and press in Ceramic. It might give good penetrating power.

A site that sells Ceramics. http://www.mcmaster.com/

Here is one type that might do the job
Wear-Resistant Toughened Zirconia Ceramics Also known as ceramic steel. As durable and fracture resistant as many metals. Fired to high hardness. Ideal for high-wear applications requiring a strong, chemically resistant material. Used for mineral handling and processing; oil drilling; and chemical, paper, and pulp processing. Use as an alternative to tungsten carbide.
Sabots could be made from nylon on a lathe and fitted with a Ceramic rod. A .38(.357) Sabot could be fitted with a 1/4 rod and loaded into a .38 special case, this would avoid the feeding problem of auto pistols.
I 'm afraid its not a very good idea. There are all sorts of materials that are harder than lead, in fact few that aren't harder. Lead is used because of its high density, which is the most important thing for a bullet. That's why lead is used instead of say steel. Ceramics of course are much less dense than even steel.

That's also why the Army uses depleted uranium in some of is weapons - one of the few materials much denser than lead.

Okiereddust,

Yes I understand Lead is used because of its high density, which is the most important thing for a bullet. What if you you were to press a Ceramic rod into a sold lead projectile to give it a hard nose. Would that give better penetrating power?

The fed have banned handgun bullets made of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.
